Taking a 4 CD game, creating it from the ground up again with possibly even MORE content, and putting it on a single 50GB disc seems.... almost impossible to me. Especially when MGS4 could barely fit 1 50GB disc.
I don't think that would be a problem. Four CDs is only 2.6 GB, they can explode the content to 19 times as big and still fit within a 50GB ceiling.

Don't believe the hype. Just because a texture is compressed on the disc does not mean you will see any noticable difference. For one, they could use lossless compression; and second, unless you have a bionic eye, Average Joe isn't going to notice slightly lossy compression in the textures once everything is in motion. Can compression make it look worse? Well sure, if you overdo it. But it doesn't have to.

Not to mention that compression = smaller files = faster load times, a big deal when you're talking about huge files from an optical disc.

It's DX8. And the PS2 is holding back FFXI from upgrading to better graphics for better stability for the PC and 360 users.
I realize this. However, I've found the problem to be a CPU issue, not a GPU issue.

They need to add multi core support for the game...and yes, drop PS2.

well, I wasn't just talking about the 4 CDs. The actuall longevity of the 4 CDs was massive. Like the above mentioned - the game is aproximatly a good 50 hours long of RPG gameplay not counting all the horsing about you can do in FF7.
