Default [Yahoo!] Tom Clancey's Ghost Recon Predicted Georgia Russia War in 2001

Dangit, Repost. SORRY! New source, old article. Please Delete. Do not read.

Quote:
The South Ossetia war, which began on August 7, bears a close resemblance to events portrayed in the 2001 Xbox and Playstation 2 game "Tom Clancy's Ghost Recon," the first level of which takes place against the backdrop of a struggle between Georgian rebel forces and the legitimate Georgian government in the South Ossetian region.

Ghost Recon's plot follows these skirmishes with a full-scale Russian invasion of the region, a subsequent evacuation of US forces, and ultimately the fall of the Georgian government. Ghost Recon almost got the timescale right, too: the game's imaginary events begin in April 2008, just a few months before the real war kicked off.

Pretty amazing how close the date is. That Tom Clancey, quite a thinker.

It's amazing considering that Tom Clancy used to be a door to door insurance salesman before meeting Larry Bond.

In a dimly lit conference room with one wall-sized 6-inch bulletproof window at the front and an oak conference table suitable for 25 political figures, are just the President and his top General.

President: We need to invade this territory

Points his finger to a glowing LCD screen positionned between him and the General.

General: We will need a strategy to do this as we have never done anything like that before.

President: Don't we have strategists to plan this sort of thing?

General: No, they either deserted or were killed during the cold war. But we do have one other option...

The general turns and looks out the window, trying to forget the gravity of the situation. The hypnotic torrential rainfall helps but his reflection betrays him.

President: What is it?

General: We have been experimenting with videogames. We produce a videogame that requires players to devise various strategies for doing what we need done. Think about it: hundreds of thousands intelligent and young minds putting all their energy into defeating our enemies and all we have to do is sit back, collect the data after a while and choose the best strategy.

The general takes another long hard pull from his cigar. The smoke clearly offends the President but he says nothing because the General is in charge here and without the General this situation is unsolvable.

President: And these kids have no idea they're actually helping us win a war?

General: If they knew it would change everything. It would make the program useless.
