Post [Bit-Tech.net] The Economy of Happiness

Very interesting read.

It figures that the wealthier gamers have the high end kit, so would it be reasonable for there to be a deluxe version of COD4 with multi-monitor and high resolution support, voice-communication features etc, and a 'lite' version locked at 1024 res, no voice chat and fancy shaders, for say £15? As long as there was an in-game option for you to pay the difference later and upgrade, would this be a good idea? I want to know.

I don't see any problem with that....as long as it doesn't get out of hand.

I like this, as long as it was reasonable prices for each feature. I know they will make it so buying it piece by piece will mean you will eventually pay $10 more for the same thing though.

It sounds likea good idea

but it would probably progress (knowing EA) to have to pay for EVERY feature.. like pay for multiplayer, pay for top graphics, pay for extra maps, etc

It would probably turn out to be like Vista with 4 versions for each game.. i have no problem paying for the full version, $30 isnt very much for something you'll use for 6~ months

Yeah, pay extra so the game will support your resolution? No thanks

I think it could work, some people like CS 1.6 players or pro gamers want stripped down versions of the game for the best performance and fps anyway.
As long as they don't charge more for the final product if you decide to upgrade.

...or at least they could release a semi-functional demo alongside the game release.
How many good demos have come out in the last few years on PC?
The only really good one I can think of is the Crysis demo and the Steam free weekends where uses get to play the FULL version of the game for a whole weekend.

Very true. Demos used to be huge on PC games (PC gamer's CDs were FULL of games), but I haven't seen anything like that in a while.
