Default [IGN]Tales of Vesperia Review

Quote:
August 22, 2008 - Ten years after it first came to U.S. shores, the Tales series of role-playing games from Japanese developer and publisher Bandai Namco is still going strong. And to celebrate its longevity, Namco Tales Studio has created Tales of Vesperia, an Xbox 360 exclusive that brings the Tales world into high-definition for the first time.

Longtime fans of the Tales games will see much they are familiar with in Tales of Vesperia, and newcomers to the series will get a solid introduction to what all the fuss is about. In bringing Tales to current-generation consoles, Namco Tales Studio stuck to most of the conventions it has created for the series over the years and added some new elements to spice things up a bit. The end result is a formidable RPG with loads of intense action, an ensemble of memorable characters and a grand, if somewhat meandering, story.

Like its predecessors, Tales of Vesperia has a real-time battle system with no random encounters. In Vesperia, you're in control of when you fight and how you go about winning once swords cross. There are times when you're ambushed or otherwise forced to fight because you're path is blocked by an Ice Bat or some such other fierce beast, but for the most part you can fight when you choose and flee when you'd rather. And once battle ensues, Tales keeps things intense and action-packed.

This game looks incredible! I know what I'm asking for this Christmas.

Increased 360 sales in japan 2000% the week it was released.

Its good to see a JRPG on the 360 that doesn't completely suck, but I think I'll stick with Mass Effect and Oblivion tyvm.

My friend is thieving my 360 for this game.

The problem is, I want to thieve my own system for it. Isn't the tales combat system kind-of like star oceans? Because if it is at all, I'm all over this game. My aforementioned friend has been raving about it for months.

(P.S. - He'll be playing it on my machine before I do, seriously. He's a much bigger JRPG fan then I am...and I still have to beat MGS.)

I believe the people that created tri-ace were originally from the tales team. Something like that. But, I liked Star Ocean way better than any of the tales games. I think it's the battle system/graphics, it just doesn't appeal to me very much. I might still get it though.

Japan sales "dropped back to Earth" this weekend after 360s ran out in Japan. Looks like it's quick gold rush hit a wall.
