Why not tear it open and find out? They can replace the thermal compound while they are at it.
__________________The power saving could also be due to cutting other hardware out (the 40GB has most of the PS2 hardware in there, right?).

The 40GB has no PS2 hardware....that's the original 20GB and 60GB models.

I used to be so concerned about backward compatibility, but when I get a PS3 I won't be throwing my PS2 out and I'll hardly ever use it. Backward compatibility was one of the reasons I was sticking with Sony. Then I bought my sister a 360 and realized how ridiculous it was. I'm still getting a PS3 because I want a Blu-ray player, not for backward compatibility. Hopefully prices will drop in the next couple months before I splurge on one.
