Default [Joystiq]Updated PS3 SKU Comparison

Quote:
So, you know how this works. Sony releases yet another PS3 SKU and, suddenly, you're tasked with keeping the entire lineup in order. Which one comes with HD compatible cables? (Spoiler alert: none). Which currently shipping model has PS2 backwards compatibility? (Spoiler alert: none). But it's not all bad news. Want to know which models are packing the cooler, quieter 65nm chips? Or which models come with free stuff? It's all in here. If there's anything we've missed or anything we've gotten incorrect, please let us know in the comments. We're quite certain this won't be the last time we update this table.

Correct me if I'm wrong but wasn't sony the first one to come out and say having multiple sku's is pointless and will confuse people?

I believe they were refering to the naming of SKUs. Like "Core Bundle", "Ultimate Bundle", "OMGWTHBBQ Bundle", ect.

Even then - it is kinda confusing the way both Sony and M$ have it.

Sony's SKUs only change small things. There are around 30 SKUs for the think PS2 but you don't know the difference between them. SKUs are more of a batch number for Sony, if they change who they use for say a Blu-ray drive (like pioneer to Samsung) then it gets a new SKU.

This will be helpful if I can get my parents to get me a PS3 this year.

You can still get it in the 60GB SKU, but other then that, all the other SKUs do NOT have BC for PS2 games. All SKUs play PS1 games.

only about a year ago slow-poke

its good that they're upping the HDD size. What with HOME and larger download sizes, not to mention the addition of HD-movie downloading in the near future. People need more than 40gb HDD space. I have the 40gb model and plan to upgrade to 160gb manually soon because i have to delete anything nowadays if i want to download anything else.

backwards compatibility doesnt effect me. being the type of person who keeps his old consoles. theyre saving alot of money by ditching the PS2 hardware and obviously there hasnt been sufficient demand to put it back since they released the 40gb SKU. it all makes sense. its just a little too "microsoft" of them to be releasing so many SKU's. IMO stick with the 80GB and leave it at that. keep it at $399 until next summer then give it a final price drop to $299. But its all about customer satisfaction. and thats the all-changing decision maker. customers are never satisfied enough.

So what you name them all the same so customers have to guess which PS3 they are buying?
