Default [gamedaily] 'Consoles Are a Problem,' says Lorne Lanning

Quote:
While consoles seem to dominate the gaming landscape now more than ever – as indicated by once PC-only developers like id Software, Valve, Crytek and Epic flocking to consoles – Lorne Lanning of Oddworld fame actually views consoles as a significant problem for this industry.

Speaking exclusively to GameDaily BIZ, he recently said, "Personally, I think the consoles are a problem. Years ago I was excited about consoles, but anything that makes development more expensive, rather than better, faster, cheaper, I think is a step backwards. When I look at what's happening, it's a bit disappointing because the consoles are running into a place where affordable games are having a rough time getting out there.".

For the orange box didnt they develop the xBox360 version and let EA make the PS3 version? I could be wrong

Anyway I'm glad consoles exist - keeps all the noobs who dont know anything about pc hardware away plus nothing will ever replace a mouse+keyboard

Eh, I like pc and consoles. Why can't they get along? There are certain characteristics for both that I enjoy! Usually I weigh my dislikes and likes to each version of the game that is out to determine if I get it for the console or the PC in the case of non-exclusivity. I'm an eye candy hoe so I weigh the ability to force AA very high on my list. I'm waiting for consoles to give me a force AA option, and an universal screenshot option! However, give consoles a break! Why are they a problem? Because it allows for ease of development and optimization? Surely it's not b/c advancement in graphics, AI, quality, etc., is making developmental times longer and more costly?

They let EA do both the 360 and PS3 version. They aren't even doing the 360 version of Left 4 Dead.

It's kinda like the difference between YouTube and your DVD player. All I need is a good idea and a camcorder and I can make a popular YouTube Video. For DVD, I need production, distribution, marketing, all prohibitive in terms of cost involved.

The analogy isn't exact, obviously. But the idea is the same. Consoles are tied to the discs they use, and unless I'm willing to invest millions, whatever great game I could be developing will do far better on internet distribution and word-of-mouth.

The opposite is also true; if I can indeed invest millions, I'll make a lot more money on the console market than on PC.

You don't even need a good idea to get a good Youtube vid...just film something funny, gory, cool, boring, pretty much anything. Film paint drying, timelapse it and you'll get thousands of views :P

Wrong.
I own both a 360 Elite and my budget gamer
I have to say consoles rule over PC's in terms of gaming and here is why...

Extremely value minded ($199 for a base 360 now)
Online services like Xbox Live completely dominate Xfire and other similar services.
More portable (lan parties are ruled by consoles)
Group friendly (more than 1 person per console)
Games optimized for consoles (ala Crysis on Nvidia vs ATI)
Patches games automatically
Ease of Use

While there maybe no overclocking or support for adding video cards more than twice the consoles price for a few extra FPS, I think consoles make more sense. Then again I still use my PC for games because I also have access to my music and movie library and internet browser.

I can almost promise you that services like Xbox Live Arcade and Playstation Network have had more games downloaded than services like Steam/EA Downloader. So don't pull that Hard Media is obsolete garbage, I have Halo 1 and a handful of Live Arcade games downloaded on my 360.

Common Sense Victor = Console

Enthusiast/Multipurpose Victor = PC

I notice PC games releasing at $48, whereas you can not find a console game under $20 even. (Go to newegg, tons of PC games under $20 and even Quake4 for $8.)
