Default [Destructoid] World of Goo has a 90% piracy rate

http://www.destructoid.com/wankers-w...e-111343.phtml

Quote:
Good old gamers, always looking after the little man. Indie game World of Goo, a title made by just two people, is suffering from an amazing 90% piracy rate. Designer Ron Carmel has confirmed reports on this issue, stating the figures are "about right."

World of Goo's creator has stated that he's seen torrent sites with 500 seeders and 300 leechers. On the plus side, he also has a few emails from people who said they pirated the game, but then went ahead and bought it. These emails are not exactly frequent, however.

"We're doing ok, though. We're getting good sales through WiiWare, Steam, and our website," Carmel assures. "Not going bankrupt just yet!"

This is very sad news indeed. While some may call me critical of the indie gaming scene, I think it's very wrong indeed to be ripping off a two-man team, especially if you love the work. 2D Boy has created a game that a lot of people really dig, and if 90% of those people are stealing it, they might not get another one in the future.

In this era of market saturation and mass produced crap, indie developers who are capable of making good games need to be nurtured, not crippled.
It's really sad to see things turned out for World of Goo developers. The game is probably the most fun and polished indie game I've ever played and as much as I hate to admit it; maybe thats just the consequence of no DRM system, even the implementation of a I lossy one, would prevent such ridiculous piracy rate, I think

That really is sad...

I can understand how some people might want to 'stick it to the man' so to speak, BUT when you rip off a game that TWO people made WITHOUT DRM because they KNOW we hate it, then i want to give the governments FULL control over the internet to stop you whores.

Petty thieves IMHO

i know and seriously, its $19.99? thats not exactly the cost of buying a house.

pirates are such ****s sometimes. i love all the pirate lovers who float the anti piracy threads going "oh, well if bla bla developers didnt give us such bad DRMs or sneaky control systems, we WOULD buy it".

no you wouldnt, you're still cheap and dont deserve it. this proves the point i always make that you cant justify piracy...coz no matter what as long as there are the means, people will do it. even if the game cost $4.99.

Fixed

There is no excuse for piracy. Not DRM, Not lack of money. It's shame to see this.

0.o Never even heard of the game.

But yea, it's messed up that people would pirate a game like this. This isn't EA, it's two guys like you and me.

People pirated the game because they don't feel like forking over $20 to some no-name developer.

Also, not everyone has paypal/a credit card. How many of those downloaders were under 18, and as such, were unable to obtain the game by other means?

And $20 is a bit steep, considering Crysis: Warhead is only $30. $10 and it would have been better off, like Audio Surf or Fantastic Contraption (both of which I've bought).

no name or not, the people that developed the game and the that publish it deserve to be paid for it.

Any little kiddie that can't pay for can go get a part time "labor friendly" job to pay for it. If their Mom or Dad say no, well then they just get to play the game.

$20 is by no means steep in any way. That is a very reasonable price. $10 is laughable.
