the current PSP "overclocks" to 333mhz max. you need custom firmware to do it, via the recovery menu

I've been running my old Psp fat overclocked at 333MHz for over a year. Works perfectly, and it makes all those little slowdowns in certain games disappear. You might notice the 30-45minute drop in battery life though.

It's not overclocking. Read the article please.

Basically, the PSP (like the iPhone and Palm Pre) are UNDERCLOCKED and locked to a certain MHz.
In this case, the PSP 1000-3000 are underclocked to 222MHz.
With a custom firmware you can FORCE the CPU to normal speeds of 333MHz for games that do not do it automatically. Recent games do this automatically without the need of custom firmware. It's not overclocking because the CPU cannot go over that stock 333MHz clock, at least from my experience of custom firmware.

Right... so not overclocking... I'll always use custom firmware anyway. So many more possibilities unlocked. For instance, I can run custom games, use it to play N64 and gameboy games, run Windows 95 on it for fun, and even use it as a secondary display for my computer to show stuff like cpu, network, ram, and hdd usage without wasting space on my main display.

Never said anything about how you shouldn't use custom firmware

haha i do that on my older Dell 19" LCD monitor

depending on the price, i think i'll buy this newer psp portable
since i need a portable gaming device for long trips etc
and i WONT upgrade the firmware this time, made that mistake last time then found out about the custom firmware community

my PSP got damaged over time though from not taking good care of it, so i don't have it any more, lol
