hmm while this is cool and all, is it needed? afaik the current PSP clock speeds were more than capable, i havnt seen a PSP game lag yet. granted i havnt played them all.

the current PSP "overclocks" to 333mhz max. you need custom firmware to do it, via the recovery menu

I've been running my old Psp fat overclocked at 333MHz for over a year. Works perfectly, and it makes all those little slowdowns in certain games disappear. You might notice the 30-45minute drop in battery life though.

Basically, the PSP (like the iPhone and Palm Pre) are UNDERCLOCKED and locked to a certain MHz. In this case, the PSP 1000-3000 are underclocked to 222MHz. With a custom firmware you can FORCE the CPU to normal speeds of 333MHz for games that do not do it automatically. Recent games do this automatically without the need of custom firmware. It's not overclocking because the CPU cannot go over that stock 333MHz clock, at least from my experience of custom firmware.
