IMO - its a stupid system. You have to reinstall it everytime you play through it. They should've just made one universal install. They did it to save space on your hard drive, because each install file iirc is about 4GB or something so if you were to install all of it together it would be about 16GB file. But, I rather have that then sit there and install at every part of the game.
That's lame, those installs take a long time. IIRC you have to beat it in less than 5hrs on the hardest setting to get the best emblem. So basically subtract at least a 1/2 hour from that for the install process. That would be really hard....I'm looking forward to it.

Does anyone know if this is the awesome PS3 that was originally included with the MGS4 bundle that could play all PS2/PS1 games?

They simply are NOT making backwards compatible PS3s anymore.

Nice bundle, although personally I have no interest in MGS4.

Why don't they just let you pick two games of your own out of their "greatest hits" catalog, I wonder? Or at least give you a handful of options to choose from. Even with "killer" bundles like this one, there are going to be people who don't want the specific AAA titles you're offering, which erodes the enticement factor of the bundle.

I have that bundle and it can play all my PS2/PS1 Games but I hear some PS2 games may have some problems running on the PS3. But I haven't encountered that yet with my games.

OP: Awesome Bundle. If I didn't have a PS3 I'd picked that one up in a heartbeat.

ALL PS3s can play PS1 games. So yes, they do have backwards compatiblity.

Sony is reported to be making PS2 Backwards Compatibility software (emulation) for every PS3. They've had the software patended since December so I would expect that soon.

It would be great if we could just pick two games period, but Sony really likes their control so that's not happening any time soon. Well, there's that and the fact that game developers might prefer to not have their products sold in any bundles.

I agree that installs shouldn't be on consoles. It's clear that Sony included it on the PS3 because Blu-Ray doesn't transfer fast enough, and thus PS3's load times would have been longer than 360's without installs. It's another one of those trade-offs, because this resulted in Sony having to include a hard drive in every PS3 model, driving the price up.

Wouldn't you say though, that Sony's install approach saves the user time and annoyance in the long run?

Personally I don't think it would have been impossible for developers to make it so there's no initial lumpy install. Instead it could be that each time the game loads data from the Blu-Ray disc onto the RAM that is identified as part of the game's "install data", it is dumped onto the hard drive when either the RAM is cleared for space reasons or when the game is quit.

Holy crap I'm off-topic. Um. Good bundle. Waiting for the slim PS3.

Not really. That argument only works for me if you start from the position that the PS3 had to have Blu-Ray, even though transfer rates were obviously too slow; thus making installs an obvious solution.

But I don't start from there, I think we know. The Blu-Ray was a choice Sony made, and they made it primarily for non-gaming reasons (that have worked out splendidly for them, to be sure). If you start from that position, that Sony chose to include a Blu-Ray drive, then when the engineers told them that the console simply would not work as consoles are "supposed" to work, the choice probably should have been rethought. Or perhaps even better....

This. This is pretty much how the Xbox 1 used it's hard drive, as I recall: pre-loading and caching of game data known to be needed in the near future. Wonderfully transparent, and I would really have liked to see the PS3 (and X360) use that same method this generation. But since no one did, I guess I have to wonder if maybe it was not all that effective...

Sounds great, but I'll wait for the slim and a price drop.

and to think last week i got the LBP and Wall-E blu-ray bundle as an early B-day gift, well would be kinda mad, except i also got both those games too, so don't really care that much, but someone needs to jump on this who doesn't have a ps3 yet, pretty much the best bundle i have ever seen, especially since its $400!
