I'd buy a updated BD to mod my PS3.

Sigh... I have MGS4 but played about 2 minutes of it. All those talk about 524358972349827 hours cut scene makes me not wanna play it. But more ps3 buyers = larger communities. Nothing wrong with that.

Actually - I believe that it wasn't "an early designed Blu-Ray drive". At that time, Blu-Ray drives were alot faster in player and burners. Sony kept the Blu-Ray drive at 2x speed so they could price the PS3 as the cheapest Blu-Ray player! A 2x reader is cheaper then an 8x reader. Obviously that shouldn't be at this point, and I think the PS3 Slim if it does exist will have a faster one.

Oh, I think he's absolutely right. Just because some people may still break out their old PS1 games, it is a certainty that, in 2009, most people don't play PS1 games anymore.

thats not counting all of the crash bandicoot, resident evil, metal gear solid, and the other ones available on PSN either.
If what he said was true, then Capcom (or any other developer/publisher for that matter) wouldn't have ANY reason at all to go out, spend money and time, pay for PSN hosting/bandwidth, to redo all their old PSX games like Resident Evil and Dino Crisis for the PSN store.

I'll have to concede the FF7 point, I don't think any of us are surprised that it's selling like crazy. I assume these are mostly people who weren't around for FF7 the first time? Because the legions of slavish FF7 fanboys surely still have their original FF7 discs, riiiight? (I have mine, and I'm no zealot!) But come on, FF7 is a special case.

And besides, I thoght we were talking about backwards compatibility with old discs...not repackaging old games as "new". It is a somewhat different marketing subject. I do believe that PS1 disc compatibility is relatively unimportant to the PS3...it's not like people going to Wal-Mart with $399 in-hand to buy a PS3 would change their mind and walk out if they discovered that their PS1 discs wouldn't work. (I don't think they care about PS2 discs that much either, but that's a different conversation.) No, what PS1 compatibility offers, and only recently offers, is the ability to sell these older games as "new" downloadable games to existing PS3 owners. That is a higely important revenue stream to Sony; but it is clearly a very different discussion than compatibility with old discs, which is a feature solely intended to keep existing customers "in the fold" as console generations change.
