a lot of people pirate/emulate ps1 games. But people buying them will always be outnumbered by those playing current gen games.

I don't suppose this is the 80GB SKU with software emulation like the original MGS4 bundle? Either way, it is a great bundle! It is ironic, though, that if this SKU does not have backwards compatibility with PS2 games, that the two games it does come with both have PS2 prequels.

The same applies to Crash Bandicoot though.
And I have alot of my original PSX discs too, don't see what that has to do with the re-release - not to mention that would take away sales if true.

Quote:
And besides, I thoght we were talking about backwards compatibility with old discs...not repackaging old games as "new". It is a somewhat different marketing subject. I do believe that PS1 disc compatibility is relatively unimportant to the PS3...it's not like people going to Wal-Mart with $399 in-hand to buy a PS3 would change their mind and walk out if they discovered that their PS1 discs wouldn't work. (I don't think they care about PS2 discs that much either, but that's a different conversation.)
Actually, that is kind of the same conversation at hand here. Many people have denied buying a PS3 just because of that - No PS2 or PSX BC, even though - they can all damn well play PSX games. But many upon times do people say "Oh - Sony is just re-releasing PSX games to make more money! What a scam! I'm not buying a PS3! It has no PSX/PS2 BC and Sony is actually trying to make money off a fault!" That is clearly not even the case.

I think I've corrected more people on OCN about them stating the PS3 has no PSX BC then I have corrected people with their misinformation about native 1080p resolutions (which is quite common because of the stupid "this game supports 1080p" on the back of the damn boxes; which imo they need to stop doing because its a bunch of BS, but thats another convo)

Quote:
No, what PS1 compatibility offers, and only recently offers, is the ability to sell these older games as "new" downloadable games to existing PS3 owners.
Actually, I see it more so for "new" downloable games to existing PSPs. I believe that is the way this is more used for to be honest, thats even kind of the way Sony advertises it sometimes, they don't even bother to mention the PS3.

Quote:
That is a higely important revenue stream to Sony; but it is clearly a very different discussion than compatibility with old discs, which is a feature solely intended to keep existing customers "in the fold" as console generations change.
It will be an important revenue stream once they get more people onboard with it. As of right now though, it is rather lame to be honest.

Not everyone has a copy of a port that doesn't exist anymore. Not to mention is was a damn horrible port to begin with.

Look Omega, I work in retail and sell PS3s and let me tell you maybe 10% of the people buying them ask about PS2 compatibility, and not one single time have I ever been asked if they will play PS1 games. That's my evidence that most people don't give a crap about backwards compatibility.

Thank for posting something that at least contributed to the conversation at hand this time.
I suppose there is no denying that BC isn't that big of a deal that people make it out to be - particularly the ones that complain all day long and poke at it. But, there are a number that do use it. Spart said that he assumed no one did, when infact there are. Whether or not you mean the downloaded one or the disc one, they're both technically backwards compatibility.

If you start from that position, that Sony chose to include a Blu-Ray drive, then when the engineers told them that the console simply would not work as consoles are "supposed" to work, the choice probably should have been rethought. Or perhaps even better....
Alright then, so your argument lies with Sony's inclusion of Blu-Ray to begin with. Well that's clearly where you and I disagree, but there's no use discussing that subject anymore.

I do not believe, however, that you can dismiss Sony's effort to make up for its console's slower ODD simply by saying the ODD shouldn't have been included in the first place. You would have the beginnings of an argument if the PS3 had slower load times than the 360 across the board, but alas the PS3 is on par with the 360 in this category. It isn't really a topic of comparison anymore. Many people wrongfully assumed that the PS3 would have terrible load times because of Blu-Ray's numbers.

But since no one did, I guess I have to wonder if maybe it was not all that effective...
Well actually the 360 does use this method. At least, I know for a fact that Oblivion does. Bethesda even released a patch at one point to fix something.

Anyway, I think both Xbox's method is different from what I'm suggesting. Microsoft's consoles seem to have cached all data being used. My idea is to do exactly what Sony does with the PS3 (caching certain important data), but only cache the install data when it is first used instead of doing it all in one lump. In a nutshell I'm calling for Sony's method to be a little more dynamic, that's all.

Any game that states it plays 1080p will play in 1080p. Go into your display settings and set it up manually. Uncheck the 1080i and the 720p and then continue. Any game that says it supports 1080p will play in 1080p. But any game that does not I repeat does not support 1080p gameplay ,will play in 480p.
