where are you getting that from? afaik if a game does not support 1080 resolution, it runs @ 720p resolutions. except a few cases.

480p is the Xbox/PS2 days. and some Wii games.

EDIT: if you think unchecking the 720p box means the game is running @ 480p, thats only coz you arnt allowing it to run 720p lol, so it runs the next best thing.

No - it will NOT play in 1080p. It will take 720p and upscale it to 1080p. That is COMPLETELY different then actually playing in and rendering native 1080p. Majority of games are 720p native, and even lower. Metal Gear Solid 4? Not even 720p.

Thats not what I'm heading. He's saying the game will run and render in 1080p if you force it too which is false. The game will either stretch 720p or upscale it if the game supports it.

nah nah what he was saying is, if the game says it supports 1080p, then it will run 1080p. if it doesnt say that, and you uncheck all the boxes, the screen will display 1080p but the games all run 480p.

which i think is also false anyway, but you guys are saying the same thing.

i find it very hard to believe that games which say they run 720p, IE nearly every game out, only run at 480p and get upscaled. 480p is like, PS2/Xbox days.

Actually there are certain games, that would use 480p instead of 720p for 1080p for whatever reason. Burnout Paradise was the only one I know of that I owned that has this problem until they patched it.

hmm. the only game i know of that has a lower than 720p actual output resolution was GTAIV which was like, 680 upscaled or something like that. you'd know, i think you told us.

All these games run natively under 720p and have some weird res.
*Infact, I'm not 110% sure but I think MGS4 might be above 720p or something.

Pretty sure there are more on both consoles sub 720p, but those are just off the top of my head for now. Did this all on my iphone

but none run @ upscaled 480p do they? as in, native 480p then just upscaling to 720p/1080p/whatever the hell your TV config outputs?

No games really do. You said GTA4 and that doesn't do that either. The last game I recall, to my knowledge, that did what you're talking about is Burnout Paradise. Which they patched.
