But it does change the fact that it's not overpriced.

If you're going to complain about it, at least get the terms right because there is a distinct difference.

There seem to be two main arguments here:

1.) "The console is not overpriced, as they're charging as little as they can already, and they're already taking losses on each sale".

2.) "The console too expensive, even if they're already taking a loss."

It seems like the problem here is the use of the word "overpriced" in place of "too expensive". What if we think of this as "The PS3 is too expensive"?

The first argument would be like telling the average car buyer: "The SSC Ultimate Aero is not overpriced, they're selling it as cheap as they can."

The second argument would be like telling the average car buyer: "The SSC Ultimate Aero is too expensive for the average consumer."

So technically, both arguments are true. So I'll rephrase.

The PS3 is not overpriced, they're already selling it for a loss, however, the PS3 is too expensive for the average consumer, which is part (if not most) of the reason they're not selling as many of them as they would like to be. They need to find a way to reduce costs and the retail price of the console.

That's what you get for putting an advanced special high end server CPU into a gaming console and expecting the prices to be low.

Sony should have instead gone the easier way and used a cheaper CPU and a stronger GPU with overall low manufacturing costs with similar gaming performance like the Xbox 360.

Maybe it should save itself from the blushes and make the PS4 soon and *somehow* give it backward compatibility with PS3, PS2 and PSX while keeping the costs low. Obviously its next to impossible, but does sony really have a choice ?

PS3 costs more than consumers want to pay and as such is overpriced.

Sony lost this time.

No, PS3 costs more than consumers want to pay and as such is too high end for the current market.

Sony lost this time

They shouldn't have released such a high end console, however, they aren't overpricing their hardware, that would be a company like apple. You get what you pay for with a PS3, it's just that most consumers don't want or need that.

This.

I concur. I also think that if the 'Global Economic Crisis' (tm) hadn't come around the PS3 wouldn't look like such a costly purchase.

And whatever was said about Activision still making profits- Sure they're making big profits on their leading franchises, but the bilge-ware/movie tie ins/ etc are ~20% the sales of the xbox version. PS3 is still a fairly niche software market due to the sales restriction to 'hardcore' users who will pick and choose games and read reviews before purchasing. In effect, it's the Anti-Wii.
the % is valid, think S2kPhile dug up the numbers in the activision thread, if not- apologies for misremembering who did.

MS probably loses money on 360 sales too. This is nothing new. Console manufacturers make their bread and butter on game contracts. It's sort of like magazine subscriptions. They give you uber deals to subscribe because the more subscribers they have, the more they can charge for ads, and THAT is where they make their money.
