NEvermind how it costs less to distribute, you burn one copy to a DVD and mail that to Valve, they rip it, convert it to .GCF or .NCF, then pop it on their download servers. MUCH cheaper than releasing via printed DVD, even factoring in the fees Valve undoubtedly charges.

Also, I have yet to see Valve discriminate against non-Valve devs on their service. It seems pretty easy to get your game sold over Steam.
the complaint though is that Valve has too much control over it and also, they contend that the games have to fight with other big budget titles, ie batman, l4d2, to get the space on the front page - you know that space that rotates with the pics. they also say that valve takes too much of a cut from total sales for the indie devs... makes it easy for them to be less profitable...

it's a stupid article, TestE.

Yeah, I know, I saw it was a dumb article in the OP's quote. My post details why I think the article is dumb.

So let me get this straight.
Your team worked to make something from the bottom and start something new.
It became incredibble populair and helps a lot of devs.
Would you honestly give it up for the "greater good"?

Anyway, this article is sad.
If you say stuff like that atleast give examples.

Steam just exploits the consumer, not the developer. It gives them full control over their title, right down to whether or not it should be resold. I disagree with this fundamental aspect of Steams service. Everything else is **** on, it's hard to find a reason or geniune complaint about them and the service. My only beef, and this should be the case everyone else (but some people seem not to care. Shame) is that you can't resell retail games. You should be able to. I'm pretty sure the law entitles you to.

I don't. If they cared about digital distribution, they would make their own Steam. As it is right now, Valve, Gametap, etc. have thrown the PC platform a lifeline in creating distribution services that allow indie developers to bypass large publishers - somehow I doubt that Valve takes a bigger cut from them than EA or Activision would if the roles were reversed. If they are annoyed at having to give Valve a cut of their sales it's on them to fix the problem.

What is funny is that 2 questions later he says "Don't get me wrong I trust Valve" When I read that I just closed the interview out and wrote it all off as BS. Go and check it out in the MaxPC mag. He actually contradicts himself two questions later LMAO is all I could do.

MPC: The download services, like Steam, are helping make it easier to buy games though, right?

RP: I’ll tell you what. Steam helps. As a guy in this industry though, I don’t trust Valve.

MPC: Because they’re competitors?

RP: Right.

MPC: You guys have worked with them a lot!

RP: I know. And I, personally, trust Valve. But I’m just saying, honestly, I think a lot of the industry doesn’t.
How about that, he must be confused cause he certainly has me confused. Maybe he spent so much time on the game he developed split personality.

I don't like Steam, it's unneccesary. They do great deals that I jump on all the time, but, I don't like games fully integrating into Steam, we should be able to sell our games when we don't want them anymore. Not to mention steam games are more expensive than buying the same title from Amazon where you also have a resell value(for games not fully integrated).

Nobody is forcing you to use Steam (except on all retail Valve games, and a few select non-Valve titles).
