So, here's a little number crunch gents.
__________________Over its lifespan, CoD4: Modern Warfare sold over 9 million copies worldwide. Over its lifespan, roughly 400,000 copies of the PC version of CoD4: Modern Warfare were sold (give or take 50k or so). If we apply (ROUGHLY) the same figures to MW2, the following should occur with the current situation. Fact: Most PC gamers are slightly more informed as to the little nuances of the games they are interested in. For those that are given their rigs or are simpleminded, we shall simply cut out 100k. This leaves us with 300,000 PC gamers. Fact: A large portion of the informed gamers who state that they will not purchase MW2 due to the restrictions and garbage imposed by IW will, unfortunately, still purchase the game. I would cut another 200k here. This leaves us with 100k people. Should the remaining 100,000 people choose not to purchase the game for whatever reason, IE: -The lack of dedicated servers -The inevitable charging for content that could be modded -The cost equivalent of nearly $90 USD in Europe and Australia The sales loss is about: 100,000x60= $6,000,000 (AT MINIMUM - REMEMBER: Australia and Europe are being charged upwards of $90 USD) 6 million USD in sales lost because of corporate greed and a pathetic excuse for catering to their gamers. Skeptical? Let's simply cut it down to 50,000 gamers who don't purchase this game. Is 3 million USD a small sum of money? I think not. That can pay years wages, bonuses, and salaries. It could be put towards the funding of a new ip, or the production of your next shoddy guitar hero (if that's the garbage you're into). Simply put, there are hundreds of us on these boards alone who won't purchase this game. If each of us has informed just a couple more about the issue (I can name 3 off the top of my head casually), that can already add up to nearly 1,000 people not purchasing this game, ie: 60,000$ USD in revenue. You're not naive enough to think we're the only gaming community on the internet are you? So for everyone saying "oh yeah, don't buy the game, i'm sure IW and Activision care so much" - Regardless of how well the console versions sell, no one in their right mind simply throws a couple million dollars away. Go jump off the deep end Activision and IW. Your loss.

Great post Furai.
According to your logic/number crunching, it seems at the low end they will lose $3 million. And it will probably be more, since you gave the benefit of the doubt to more PC gamers choosing to buy it regardless.

Infinity ward is being retarded.. I mean its so obvious people want dedicated servers, yet they keep saying they know what gamers want, and thats its for the best, blah, blah, blah, do something people want, add dedicated servers. MatchMaking works great for console, but for PC, its a no go.

If this user's connection is garbage, everyone will suffer. And likely, if you quit because of the garbage connection, hacking, mic spamming, etc, you will lose rank or some other form of stat-tracking goodness. In addition, this locks out the ability for modding, opening the door for IW and Activision to charge PC gamers for extra DLC, and as much as they want. Lastly, the longevity of games such as Counter-Strike is due to dedicated servers. If IW (or activision) wants, they could simply pull the plug on matchmaking and force you to buy the next installment of their "oh so wonderful series". On top of this, IW is having the nerve to state that "they know what gamers want" and that they are far more in control of the situation than they really are. They're losing sales left and right.

What happened to IW? They seem so out of touch. Placing the blame on the publisher doesn't even make sense now that Mr. "402" made that heinously wrong statement about "knowing the gamer."

They just know money better than gamers, that's all.

For me, I did not buy due to the simple obvious and possible fact, the game looks to be positioned for max profit on PC. Everything looked to be geared for charging more later down the road and thats one reason I did not and will not buy. The Increased cost was just an extra poke in the side. Then when no dedicated servers was announced, that completely turned me off.
I sure do hope other devs take good note of what happened here and don't focus on making a bigger buck, but focus on making a great game. Then the money will find them...
