Default [gamesindustry.biz]RedLynx: We put Trials PC game on torrent sites

http://www.destructoid.com/trials-de...s-154333.phtml

Quote:
Trials developer RedLynx has admitted that in order to market its PC title it leaked it to torrent sites for pirates on the same day it was released to paying consumers.

The pirated version of the game does not include support for leaderboards, said company CEO Tero Virtala, a crucial feature that is the "soul" of the game. Without it, he hoped users of the hacked version would want to upgrade to the legitimate copy once they began enjoying the game.

"Piracy is here, so how can we take advantage of that? What we did actually, on day one, we put that game immediately on all the torrent networks ourselves," revealed Virtala, during a panel discussion at Develop Liverpool yesterday.
I have personally tried to stop having an opinion on the matter... but thought this was interesting.

i don't know why sites don't spam & seed torrents and place on their site how to use them instead of simply having direct downloads,

after a week of seeding windows 7 the userbase would have easily reached critical mass for microsoft to no longer need to offer direct downloads. it would save an absolute fortune in bandwidth/server running costs, using every pc as a mini-server ala a seed pool.

then sue them all for piracy and make lots and lots of money. although leaking the torrents intentionally might muck that up.

Because average joe doesn't know how to forward his ports.

Wrong. There's actually a company that does that. Put up torrents and then sue the downloaders.

Some world we live in, eh?

But this is relying on the theory that everyone will continue to seed for x amount of days after downloading, and that there will constantly be a stream of downloaders and/or seeders. Which doesn't really happen too often (not saying it doesn't happen, TPB has had torrents with over 5k seeders for a year or two actually O.o)

I think they should've put up the pirated copy later on, so that they could see how much their sales increased. Then there'd be a marketing strategy in here

Some world we live in, eh?
so they make more money off suing people rather than the sales of their product?
