Default [escapist]Unreasonably Dedicated

The Escapists John Funk talks about the unreasonably high demands of pc gamers
Quote:
Many developers do make games for the love of the medium, but at the end of the day, Infinity Ward and companies like it have bills to pay and their employees have families to feed. So what sense does it possibly make to allocate extra time, money, and manpower to their smallest fanbase, which is coincidentally the group most likely to pirate the game anyway? While I have no doubt that there will be more pirates out there in a misguided attempt to "stick it to the man," you can't tell me that the game wouldn't have been pirated to high hell and back even with dedicated server support - the first game certainly was.
...
Now, by all means, return to your regularly scheduled protests, but remember that the most powerful protest tool at your disposal is your wallet. If it infuriates you so much, don't buy the game. Don't be a tool and pirate it - that just gives developers more reason to flee the PC platform entirely - but a refusal to purchase will speak louder than angry internet rants ever could.

I'll say what I said in the other thread here as well. We pay much more for our "consoles." I'm fine with paying more for games, though it's kind of sad to see it happening. However, when I buy a game on the PC, I expect it to be customizable and to be able to play it how I want with who I want. If I didn't care about that, I would have paid $250 for a console and the restricted gameplay that comes along with it.

Good article with some good points.

Except that implementing dedicated servers would cost Infinity Ward MUCH less than paying for and maintaining their own proprietary servers. Since we're the "smallest fanbase" as he succinctly put it, wouldn't it make more economical sense to let us pay for our own servers?

This move was about control, pure and simple - not laziness, not equality, not economics, it's all about IW calling all the shots because they think they're smarter than the entirety of the PC modding community.

But what you're also paying for is choice.
The 360 has, what, 200 games? I doubt you could fit a list of PC games on a page. A novel might fit them, maybe.
What I don't understand is the general attitude that people HAVE to play MW2, but because it's not to their liking, that they have the right to complain. I've played CoD4 online, and it's nothing special. I even believe that something like UT3 is a better online experience.
You say that you paid heaps for your system. I say fine, now go play some of those thousands of games out there for it, and stop getting hung up on this one.
Hell, A lot of them are free. How many console games are free?

And bollocks that you pay more for the games.

I'm talking about MW2. $60 is a hell of a lot more than anything I've paid for before. Also, COD4 is my favorite MP game to date. If you think it's nothing special, that's your opinion. I don't get why you're bringing up the games that PC has over consoles. I don't play any of them with the exception of Crysis, Crysis Warhead, and Red Faction: Guerrilla.

In my case, it's more of a sense of overwhelming disappointment than entitlement. Why should IW go out of their way to remove features from a game, especially if it will cost them more? This game had so much potential, and in a few respects it's met them. But then they removed the few things that make PC gaming much better than consoles. I LOVE large games. My computer can handle them. But now I can't play them.

All in all, I bet the game is still fun. However, I see this as one of the largest fails to date with an anticipated game.

They packaged a pile of dog ****, set the price at $10 higher than usual, put it on Steam so that you can't resell and did not release a free demo.

This is not a fail, this is a massive, massive victory on behalf of IW.
