Default [Gamespy] Time's Top 2009 Inventions Places Natal Above AIDS Vaccine

Apparently editors at Time think untested gaming peripheral Project Natal is a better invention than an AIDS vaccine that actually works (well, at least 31 percent of the time). The piece on Time's online portal gathered the 50 best inventions of 2009 -- which includes genuine winners like the electric eye, the solar shingle, teleportation and vertical farming -- and placed the AIDS vaccine at #8 and the Natal add-on a whole three steps higher at #5.

Cooler heads did prevail as readers are allowed to rate each entry according to their own significance standards. In readers' eyes, the AIDS vaccine's rightful home is at the #5 slot, whereas Natal was pushed all the way back to #29.

Its just that Natal is a big step forward in immersion technologies. No doubt its the beginning of something that will take simulation and games to a new level. Im excited for it .

Meanwhile, AIDS vaccine does not affect me, or anyone I know at all.

To be perfectly honest, the AIDS vaccine only works a minority of the time, and we dont even know why it works. I'd call that more of a lucky guess then an invention.

Yeah, that would have made my list of top inventions of 2009, right alongside the phaser, warp drive, and the food replicator.

AIDS: Brought to you by Xbox 360's Project Natal poster boy, and Time's Virtual Person of the Year 2009.

I'd pay to see a virtual iteration of an imperfect person. As if game developers would play to that market.

Edit: That's right. That's F@H.

I thought I heard the AIDS vaccine was highly unreliable and unproven. In which case why would it even make the list?

And.... so what? Time ranks things differently than the people would. What's your point?

It had a 13% (I believe) higher effective rate than the placebo. As was already mentioned, they simply stumbed upon the fact that this drug seemed to affect HIV rates, and they weren't originally even using the drug for anything HIV/AIDS related. It is a step in the right direction though. 13% is better than nothing.
