Default [CNN] Is there a PlayStation3 shortage?

Quote:
If you didn’t get one of the 1.36 million PlayStation 3 consoles that were sold over the holidays, you may have a hard time getting your hands on one now.

Sony officials are warning about a possible retail shortage due to massive sales in December. Sony is cautioning that the next few months will be tough for PS3 shoppers as the company tries to get more consoles on store shelves.

"We're working very hard with our retail partners to meet consumer interest, but the demand is tremendously high for the PS3 and we expect tight inventory in the coming months," Sr. Director of Corporate Communications Patrick Seybold told IGN.

Retailers are reacting. Best Buy is telling people they can’t pick the PS3 up at stores when ordering online and will have to wait until late February or early March for delivery. Amazon is changing their purchasing policies and limiting each household to only one unit.

Well I can see this is a good thing for Sony. Sales are finally picking up Who knows, maybe the PS3 will turn out to be as successful as the PS2.

I drove 70 miles to get my Playstation 3 on Feb 2 2007. like 3 months after it came out. The store manager told me when they would get another shipment. 20 every other week this tiny store would get, and usually sold them all that day.

No console will beat the PS2. Seeing how up until this year it was still competitive in sales.

Must be a fake, artificial, manufactured shortage to drive up interest and keep the prices high. No wait...that was my impression of the anti-Wii crowd two years ago, when the Wii was having its shortages. Surely the people who bought into that conspiracy nonsense back then will think the same is true today with the PS3, no?

In all seriousness, I am surprised by this. Sales had started ticking up pretty well before Xmas I thought, so you would think they would have planned for that and turned out more consoles.

Agreed.
I had no trouble getting an excellent deal on a new 250GB slim during the January sales here in the UK. A quick scan round town of my local shops shows no shortage either. But then I live in Swansea (anyone who's been here knows what I'm talking about) and I can't imagine the population here rushing out to buy a PS3 of all things anyway.

Definitely fake. I would buy this story at the PS3 launch but not now. The holiday sales were expected so the only possible reason for a shortage would be Sony withholding consoles preparing for a new SKU.

I haven't owned a console since the original playstation. However, this January, I decided to dive in and get a ps3 mainly for its media capabilities. I had a terrible time finding any. I wanted a 120gb slim, but nobody had any... for a few weeks after Christmas. Bestbuy had about ten 250gb versions, but I had a hard time parting with $50 extra for the extra storage I'd absolutely never use. But after weeks of nobody having any of the 120's in stock, Bestbuy's stock of 250's dwindled to about three or four, and I panicked and got the 250. Frankly, this news isn't surprising to me. I'm very happy that I did it though. I'm thoroughly enjoying it, and most surprisingly, it's not because of the games.

I still think it sounds a little contrived. It's got to be complicated by other factors besides sudden popularity. The Slim is definitely a little more appealing, but any Best Buy around Chicago always had a pallet of PS3s that just sat there for the last 2 years. It's probably more that production dipped because stores stopped ordering so many.

Edit, so I didn't read as thoroughly
