I just bought my first gaming rig since on my old rig, Half Life 2 was the most intense game my system could play. I finally fired up the first game I bought to see what the system could do, and it is Bioshock. All I could think was, WHAT THE @#L@??? I can't believe this game exists. I can't believe games have come this far. During the intro, I sat there for a minute because I didn't realize that the cut scene was over, because I thought the graphics were too beautiful for it to be actual game play. So, yeah... WOAH!!!

"Back in the day"? FEAR was last year, for pete's sake! I only have a handful of "whoa" moments. Ultima Underworld: The Stygian Abyss - First true 3-D, smooth-motion dungeon crawler. After years of step-based dungeon crawling, it was pretty darn cool. Ultima VII: The Black Gate - Just for the graphics and change in game play. The step-up from U6 to U7 was huge, it redefined what an RPG could be to me. X-Wing - I had no idea such a game was possible when I bought it, the screenshots on the box did not do the game justice. I was expecting a Star Wars version of sprite-based Wing Commander, but holy crap was it so much better. Aliens vs. Predator 2- This one is kind of silly, but the second mission of the Alien campaign you're just surrounded by pink "nothing", and I was like "Okay, what the heck is this?" So I start clicking fire and soon realize I'm an alien inside a human trying to burst out! I cracked up, that was awesome. Doom 3 pre-alpha - I downloaded the pre-alpha, which only ran in 640x480, no AA, and ran like crap on my PC. But even then I was more awe-stricken by the lighting effects than I have ever been by any graphics before or since. The realistic shadows cast by a spinning ceiling fan were capticating, and made even that low-res image look more "real" than any game I had ever played. Good lighting is par for the course these days and so many people take it for granted; heck, they were already complaining about it when Doom 3 went live. I don't think I've really had a "whoa" moment since Doom 3. It's becoming harder for developers to "get to me". It's starting to be like movies: even the "creative ideas" have been done before, albeit maybe in a slightly different way. Rare gems like BioShock are an exception, but I can't say it was a "whoa" moment since all the pre-release hype left few surprises in the game itself.

AVP2 - like Vulcan posted, on the Alien campaign missions once you finally found your sleeping face hugging victim, then the black screen, and a sound, like a human heart beating, then click the mouse and BITE and breaking through the guys chest was totally a WHOA moment. BTW AVP3 why not?
FarCry - when you start off in that bunker system and finally get to a part with a view of the outside, the beauty of the jungle, water, and birds flying around definite WOAH effects. F.E.A.R - (the whole game really) but at the end, after the big explosion and you are riding away in the chopper, when Alma hops up in it. Doom3 - First time you meet up with the, can't remember the name of it but its the flying kind of round demon that shoots rockets at you, they looked like big flying tomatoes in Doom lol.

that thing scared me! Especially since I was watching in the dark (I like to tell people it was for ambiance but I was just too lazy to turn the light on )!I remember another oldie as well. Daggerfall. Just the size of the "world" in that game was amazing for its time!

Bioshock... the first entry into rapture, the first use of the Bees Plasmid... Heck, the whole game. Can't wait to play it again
CoD1. The first time using the Scoped KAR98K... GTA: San Andreas: the mission where you are with your gang and then you run through the billboard World In Conflict: the cinematic for the second last mission... that freaked me out... NFS underground 2 - seeing it on proper graphics with the sweet lighting effects for the first time. Crysis: the first sunrise... There are so many i can't think of them all...

Half Life - the sheer scope and complexity, and the AI - the grunts are still harder to fight than the combine. The combine are nothing. The grunts would work together, run back and forth, throw more grenades, use more emplaced positions..
Far Cry - the graphics were to die for. And unlike Crysis, you didn't need an awesome machine to make it look stunning and run properly, it actually scaled and just looked more stunning the better hardware you had. Half Life 2 - everything about the above games rolled into one.

Recently, Bioshock and GTA4.
Back in the day, I remember freaking out over the opening sequence of Day of the Tentacle. Oh, the first time I saw a Doom demo running in our local computer shop, I almost ish'd my pants!
