Silent Hill has a different kind of appeal. While with Resident Evil you have hordes of zombies to blow away and lots of "BOO!" moments, Silent Hill is more clever. It is creepy. The enemies are only half of the scare factor. The creators try their damndest to make you uncomfortable. It's wonderful.

The series is also highly praised for it's stories, and how intriguing the town of Silent Hill is (we aren't told a whole lot about what's going on).

Start with the first game. An absolute f*cking classic, and still scary.

This ^

RE can be scary, but SH gets the whole "this is disturbing" thing done right.

Silent Hill is like one of those games that gets under your skin and gives you nightmares. I still have nightmares about possiblities that all of the sudden I'm stuck in the otherworld. Silent Hill 5 isn't as original as the first few ones. Also, if you're planning to play, try to play through the series in order so you can get an idea of the story.
