I wrote this little tutorial up for my old squad when I was with them. This fixed the handshaking failure and the other major ones.

Hopefully it helps someone.


1. Navigate to your call of duty 4 folder
2. Look for a folder called "pb"
3. Delete the folder
4. go to http://websec.evenbalance.com/downlo...ws/pbsetup.exe
5. Download punkbuster and install it.
6. Click on add a game add the game and any other EA related games you have installed.
7. Click update games
8. After that is does
9. Click on start and go to run
10. For Vista users click on start then in the search thing type run and click on it
11. put services.msc in the box and then hit enter
12. A new menu should pop up
13. Look for PnkBstrA and PnkBStrB
14. If The PnkBstrB isn't showing try this
15. Leave Up Your Services Box
16. Start Call Of Duty 4
17. Minimize It BY Pressing Windows Key
18. Open Up The Services Window Again and Hit F5 and see if PnkBstrB is showing.
19. If It Is then you can go into punkbuster servers now.
20. If not download this http://www.evenbalance.com/downloads/pbsvc/pbsvc.exe
21. Run the test and try again and see if both a and b are showing in services

Ive done this many times, and on win7 its totally random for me. Like, some times when i fire up COD4, I can play fine, but other times, i get kicked like 4 times before i can stay in a server

I'm not totally sure on Windows 7, once I get my copy from MSDNN I will upgrade and see if I can find a fix for that.

Best thing I could suggest is double check to make sure you have PnkBstrA PnkBstrB to your firewall. Also make sure you have them set in your services to start automatically.

This fix has worked fine for me on Windows 7 RTM:
- Install COD4 - when it asks to install PB, I said "no"
- Install COD4 patches up to 1.7
- Manually installed PBSETUP 3.4 into another directory, "My Documents>pbsetup" or whatever.
- Run the PBSETUP installer, told it to "Add Game" for COD4. Then click check for updates.
- Download and ran the PBSVC.EXE to install the PB services.

Works every time for for me.

I have never had a problem with punkbuster at all. I hardly ever check for updates, maybe thats because I don't use anti-virus software or anything of the type.

Well as in that case, getting kicked from Punkbuster could mean you don't have the latest PB patch/update. So I am guessing try make sure nothing is blocking punkbuster from internet access at all.
