Default Game Patching: A Satire

Anyone else ever have this happen to them?

So I've got this game that I've legitimately acquired through Steam (Aion) and after having downloaded it for something rediculous like 13 hours (you know the feeling) I finally get to that 99% and finally INSTALLATION COMPLETE! Woohoo!

But all is not well in the land of happy life sabatage. After downloading and installing said mmog, I then get the pleasure of downloading the patches from NCSoft. This patch (set) is, get this: 8867.8MB. Almost 9gigs. But thats not the point.

The point is this.

Do you ever go through this patching process and get an estimated download time so rediculous you can't help but laugh outloud, making your roommates, neighbors, children and pets all look at you askance?

"Oh, great. My download is estimated to complete in 1408.3 minutes. Wonderful. Let me grab my calculator to even figure out what that means..."

When you are watching that patch kb/s indicator screaming at you that its buzzing along at a furious pace of 125kb/s (thank you mobile internet card, you are my hero...)? That is where I am. Basically I am having the privledge of downloading and installing an almost 20gig game. Wow, I didn't even think about that before it came spewing out of my mouth and onto this forum...

20GIGS, jesus christ. How about compressing these patch files and then having the game automatically unzip them into the patch folder? And yes, I understand that wouldn't change the fact that the contents of the file are almost 9GB.

But it would sure save my sanity!

Okay, not quite a satire in the literal sense, but this situation still has the grimey fingerprints of insanity all over it.

I was starting to empathize, then I saw your d/l rate of 125kb/s... try d/l at 25kb/s... thats painful.

Buts seriously, I do empathize. Patches are getting larger than the games, these days.
