Default How would "YOU" design a gaming console?

1st off, THIS is not going to run XBOX 360 games! Nor PS3 or Wii.

Think up a console (I call it that because it won't upgrade.) and list parts, specs, OS, etc. Anything and everything about it.

I ask that it be the following: Bigger than a 360, more powerful than a 360, no crossfire/SLI, have a customized OS to run it, and not be easily messed up by users, ex: Straight to a dashboard, no command console, no "Computer/HD750/Program Files x86/"... etc. It needs to be idiot proof (Trust me somebody would complain if they screwed up their new system because they had freedom but no sense.) The system is an "idea" if ever actually made real, there would be much customization of the parts by the manufacturers to be cheaper/smaller/etc.

I thought up the following, it can be smaller if need be.

Case: Custom Case (e_e I really don't care enough right now. You heard me. LOL)
Motherboard: GIGABYTE GA-MA770T-UD3P (Yeah yeah, "make a custom one" I'll do that... um... never? I don't feel like it is the more accurate answer.)
CPU: AMD Phenom II X4 945 (And use high quality thermal compound with it's heatsink.)
RAM: 2x4GB of any cost effective DDR3 1333 (If it works it did the job.)
Graphics Card: ASUS HD 5770 (And I suppose make a deal where they come factory overclocked, IDC if I just did something I said not too.)
PSU: Corsair PSU (Don't care which one, I'm not in the mood to think it out any further.)
Controller: Custom controller, similar to the one on a 360, but with PS3 thumb stick locations, and 4 more buttons, 2 by the right thumb, and two added to the back, add perhaps some kind of tilt detection.
OS: Some kind of windows based OS, perhaps 7. Alter the user interface with the OS to be a very simple interaction.
Games: Altered PC games or custom games designed to support the custom OS interface.
Everything else: IDC.

So, to sum the above up, this will (I assume) kick the 360 out a window on the 5th floor of a building onto the street. The manufacturer can work out all the deals/contracts/etc. And don't be so technical about it either, it's a concept/idea. Thank you and good day.

...ahhhh.... pay for custom designs. Consoles don't use off the shelf components because they are mass-produced and specialized.

It's all ready in my sig.

Although it is a full tower.

The fact that it's NOT a console means it wins hands down to anything marketed as a full sized console today.

specialized yes... but we are not making some lame box that spits moving pictures at you with the effort of a dying sloth. Just roll with the idea, make a PC, and assume it will have a custom OS made for it. Try to outdo the current consoles and pretend it will get made.

Try to make something that can handle 32 players.

That's like saying "take car parts and make the bestest motorcycle"

I mean otherwise the simple answer to your question is just to build a badass computer and assume that they can shrink everything and make it cheap.

Realistically I would do

amd phenom II 955 or 720
micro atx board with 2 pcie slots(dfi jr)
2 ati 4650 low profile in crossfire(about the fastest in low profile sadly)
4 gig of ram
low profile aftermarket cooler
250gb hard drive

for case probably something like this
a media center micro atx case
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16811112230

Now if I was really going to build a gaming system I would probably have what I have now with tri-fire 5870's or 4890's in a full atx media center case.

Minus the case you could probably build that first system for under what a ps3 was when it came out.

Did you not read the part about no xfire or sli?

Anyways, this task your asking is quite silly.

basically take the top of the line single components and make it a htpc...

ex:
cpu: i7 975
ram: corsair 12gb dominators @ 2000mhz
hdd: corsair 256gb SSD
gpu: evga gtx 295
mobo: evga x58 micro
psu: corsair 750hx
case: LIAN LI PC-A05NB
cooling: custom water kit
controller: xbox 360 wired or wireless

Grand total... ALOT

there is your "custom console" rig.

System: Money Pit
CPU
Intel q6600 @ 3.9ghz (433x9)
Motherboard
EVGA 780i FTW
Memory
4x2gb Corsair XMS TwinX 866mhz @ 5-5-5-5-18
Graphics Card
Tri-SLi eVGA 9800gtx+
Hard Drive
WD 2x750gb raid0, Seagate 3x1.5tb raid5
Sound Card
7.1 Onboard (no room for sound card)
Power Supply
Corsair 750HX + 450w GPU PSU = 1200w TOTAL
Case
APEVIA MX-ALIEN
CPU cooling
Mugen 2 w/2 3k Ultra Kaze in push/pull
GPU cooling
Stock @ 100%
OS
Win7 Ultimate x64
Monitor
22" Acer x223w, 22" Samsung 2233RZ 120Hz@1680x1050
