Post #3 has been updated using 120x25mm 47 cfm Yate Loon fans on a 1.25" shroud in pull on the 480 GTX rad. They actually did pretty good to my surprise...

Well atleast you found out that lesser fans can work "OK"

HaHa...

....Yeah its kind of surprising to me that they did OK at all you cant get much more low performance then those fans...So I know the lower cfm 80 something cfm should work great on these rad's....Even the 69 cfm Panaflo should do fine on one....I'd still use the 120x38mm fans with it though, but I'd use them on any rad...

what about thunderblades? any good if used in P/P?

Yeah they might very well work out fine on 1.5" shrouds...These 47cfm Yate Loons are on a 1.25" shroud and they are only 6.875C hotter then 4-100+ cfm fans on a 3/4" shroud...So just guessing I would say they would come close to being the equal of that....Really the little things did great when you consider the heat load I have on this rad with a Pelt in the loop..I'm dumping around 315W...Thats like a heavy OC'ed quad and a high end GPU in the loop...I would suggest these fans though they will have a higher pressure then the thunderblades and are really pretty quiet..Panaflo w/ RPM 68.9CFM ..What you have to realize is that the Sunon and Panaflo Db ratings are pretty well what they are supposed to be they are used in industry and scientific applications they have to be...Made for comp fans are way off most of the etime...

When I first started this I didn't realize just how much difference a shroud did make...I thought they were only good for a C or 2 at most...Burn asked me to do this testing and I'm glad he did...I have some 1.5" aluminum channel ordered and will re-test the high cfm fans on a full 1.5" shroud that should give me pretty close to the ideal shroud depth...Hopefully I will be able to wring out several more C...

hmm. reason i asked is because my rad choise will be based on it (dont want to buy more fans just to run an already expensive rad). its still a while before i'll go WC, but if i do, i want to know my stuff.

A lot will depend on what you have in your loop, how much you intend to OC and of course the fans you intend to use...

If you think you might go with a heavily OC'ed quad or a Pelt at sometime I would go with the biggest rad you can afford for the max surface area, like the 480 GTX, even with it if you run a Pelt you will need to run higher cfm 120x38mm fans I'm sure, same for the PA.3....

If you are only going to OC that dual core and a GPU the PA.3 would make more sense with the120x25mm fans...Though from this testing it looks like the Thunderblades would do well on shrouds in a push-pull with a GTX also...As far as that goes a BIP 360 or Swifty 320 would be OK with that heat-load and the 120x25mm fans also....

yeah, i was planning on a quad. be it G0 Q6600 or penryn series, i would like to join he 4GHz club

but even though i got a job, money is always an issue. currently my choises are the BIX and Magicool XTREME triple. the latter costing way less than the BIX. (and WC gear is expensive pretty much anywhere outside the US - BIX360 costs as much as you would pay for a PA120.3) thinking about it, 2x magicool SLIM triple or BIP might be an option too. (for same price as BIX)

Nice! The old loons do pretty well considering, and if those are the LED variety which they look like...I think they are actually 38cfm

I have one of those for a rear case exhaust fan, they run completely silent.

Anyhow, that's good to know for folks that want to run quieter fans, but like you said, it's not much more noise to go with medium speed panaflos that are much better at pulling air through dense fins with the 38mm blades.

Yeah those little fans I cant even feel the air from them even when their not on a rad..

...They sold them as 47cfm and they are the LED fans so I don't know either way its amazing to me that they worked at all...I'd say the 69cfm and up 120x38mm fans are great for this rad...

EDIT: I just found out what the wattage rating is on these bad boys..No wonder they cool even with those little fans...480 GTX Wattage Rating
