If i had the money (less than $1K?) i would buy the same parts and follow along. My dad could use this BT badly.

cyber druid didn't see my sub genius reference on page one.
on subject what do you think the budget for a rig like this is going to be? Also for a super fail safe why not put a noisy high flow rate pump on a T-intersection that pull all the water to an external holding tank if something goes wrong, something that clears the lines relatively quickly.

You really don't want to clear the lines. Pumps running + no water = bad

I found this post from a while back ...
Cathars Post about Pumps
Quote:
Did a heat-dump test on the RD-30. It's heat dump into the loop is actually fairly high, despite being a magnetic armature design. This is supported in that the casing barely gets warm.

Basically measured that around 83% of the pump's power draw gets passed into the water during in-line use.

Pump was measured to draw 28.1W. Calculated heat dump was 23.2W, with around an estimated 10% margin of error on that value.
Cathar does a great job of showing the plus's and minus's of quite a few pumps ... including the RD-30 ( page 9 of his posts ).

Post #2 points out the negatives of the overly powerful pumps and their heat dumps into a cooling system.

Another thread also states that the RD-30 @ 24v kicks out 56 dba of noise. If true, this pump would not be a good pump for your silent build.

I look forward to reading about your build !

Thats the 30 RZ or RLZ Joe thats an AC pump...You don't want to go over a 20 RLZ or RL for the AC pumps because of heat dump...The 30RD is 24V and run at 18V to reduce heat-dump....

EDIT: Hang on let me look again...Yeah he does go into the RD a little on page 9, hadn't ever seen that before...

Yup yup ... here's the link directly - RD-30 numbers from Cathar

Quote:
It dumps around 80% of its power draw into the loop as heat. At 18v in achieves something like 7.5mH2O of peak pressure, around 20LPM of peak flow, and draws around 30W of power when installed in a system. Those figures are from memory. Am not at my desk in Australia where I wrote them all down.
So, using the 80% draw scenario, at 18v and 30W of power ... it's dumping approximately 24w of heat into the loop.

Oh well...I won't know until I build it. I trust Cathar and have a great respect for his work so most likely I will be the proud owner of yet another piece of hardware I didn't really need and don't use...that's life...I needed to go dig a pond out back anyway...

EDIT: I may have to set up a two stage rad and use one small rad (like a Bonneville heatercore) specifically to trim the delta for the pump dump. The enclosure is a two compartment design...the upper compartment is for the 120.3 and 6 fans in a Sonex lined "air tunnel" and lower compartment is for pump/psu/'tronics/backplane for hydraulics & cabling. Adding a heatercore to the bottom is easy enough...
