After testing last night, yes, this is VERY much the case! The idea was if we had a rad in the loop we could happily run the PC without the chiller running, then only run the chiller when needed. This was not a good idea so we'll be removing it in the final build :P

yeah but we wanted to do it ourselves :P it's half the challenge! and we can also of course then do the fornt panel etc however we want, build on whatever extras we want, etc...

BTW

turns out that the temp probes that we got with the case, don't love the below 0C. These were taken roughly the same time. This is a pic form the probes, left is inline straight after the chiller, and right is in the resevoir:

and this is a probe testing the well on the radiator:

Can anyone recommend any good monitors to use for around zero degrees? If not, we'll just add one to the design for the controller.

oh right lol fair enough.

today we will be procuring:
  • PTFE tape (slight leak on one of the barbs in the resevoir)
  • copper tube (gonna use it between the joins in the cases to minimise wear on the edges)
  • track cutter for the circuit board

You might be interested in this LCD with the scab option.

You can program it to display any number of things. It uses Dallas DS18B20 onewire temp sensers that have a range of +100c to -55C.

I use it to read temps and give outputs to my pump/chiller controller.

How do you run the DD18B20 in line with the water?

Any more detail on your controller?

Unlike your design, my controller is rather simple and crude. Not much more than a relay box.
Inputs:
110v Ac
12v DC from PSU
Input from LCD fan control header
Outputs:
110v AC to chiller
110v AC to pump
Functions:
Pump circuit.
12volts dc from PSU to trip the pump control relay on power up.
Override switch incase I want to run the pump with out turning on the computer
It also incorporates a delay on break relay at the AC pump (adjustable from .5
to10 min.) That allows water to continue pumping for couple of minutes after
shutdown.
Chiller circuit.
The controller uses the LCD software to control the chiller.

I set the temperature threshold for one of the fan headers to turn on the chiller, I adjust the length of time it runs with another Delay on break relay.
I epoxyed a temp sensor into a tee in the inlet water loop.
It also has a three-way override switch. On, override software Off, override software On.
It’s pretty crude but it works for me.
If you guys can program EPROM’s, I think you guys could make a really sweet controller with the dallas one wires. They even have a humidity sensor.

Make a jacket out of a big styro-foam block or other insulating material to go around your rad when your running the chiller and it will be fine....That is a good option if you don't want to run your chiller all the time...

That looks like a hard disk caddy you've mounted it in am I right?

Now that you've pointed them out I'm considering it for a future version. I have an account with Maxim (the site you linked to) so I'll get some samples from them.

Could possibly combine it with a USB controller as well, they're fairly simple from what I understand though I've not played with one yet.

A note on the current project:
We've just fired up the PC in the new rig with the new chiller system so we're going to give that a try to make sure it's all stable, then try the card in it.
