Question. Will my MCW60 (not the new MCW60-R) fit my new 3850? The mounting holes seem to be of the same layout as my old x1950xt, so it may work. However, I have noticed on pics that the core area does not have a shim around it like the x1950xt.

Based on swiftech's product page the standard hold-down plate is compatible with the 3800 series; the R simply means retail packaging, newer versions just include more hold-down plates (which can also be purchased separately)

Mine came with the standard ATI and nvidia installation screws and back plates. I used the nvidia ones for my x1950xt, since it had the four screws instead of two like the older x8xx cards had. On the Swiftech site I notice they sell separate HD2900 plates and screws, but it looks awfully similar to the standard plate I have.
