Default External Cooler Idea (Not a fridge!)

I was thinking recently at the thought of building a separate rad & pump box, akin to CD's Monolith. But load it with a pair of 360 rads side by side (possibly a pair of 240s), and instead of using twelve 120mm fans...using a pair of 250mm fans staged at a distance from the rads, one push, one pull.

Why? Expense. 12 120mm fans costs a lot of money for high quality, low noise fans, 2x 250 costs about $60-80 I believe, gives good airflow, and very little noise. But I am not sure if they generate enough air pressure to really work well with radiators...

It's doable and been done before to house all the water cooling stuff in a separate adjunct case.

still, $80 is a lot for two big fans...

Isn't there a TT case that uses a 25cm fan on the side? I remember seeing a case like that somewhere...

Do you plan on build a shroud for the 250mm fans?

12 Yate Loons would be like $45 and would provide better performance.... more CFM and more air pressure.

Well, I was pretty much thinking that the box itself would be the shroud Just a square box with a pair of large fans at either end, with two rads side-by-side in the middle.
And I'll correct myself: Approximately $46 for 2x250mm
Right now, I am just thinking, no real plans to start scavenging steel from work to build this or anything....yet.
But Duckie, you are hitting on what I was really wondering, if the 250mm's would have enough air-pressure to really bother with trying it. 105 cfm is nice, but if it doesn't have the force to get through the rad, then it is useless just the same.

As DuckieHo already mentioned, for almost the same price you'd be getting way more performance out 12x Yate Loons compared to 2x250mm.

Might be better using this setup: Yate Loon (YL)

3x YL pushing > shroud > rad > 3x YL pulling & pushing > shroud > rad > 3x YL pulling

And you'd be cutting down on 3x YL

True, but then you are trying to cool the second rad with already warm air.
As well...the Yates are louder
But I do understand that the yates will have a higher pressure, and better ability to push air through the rads. As well, when considered, more combined air-flow.

Yup, no good. The heat you remove from first rad is keeping the second rad from cooling as well. i.e. First rad's incoming ambient air temp is 20C, second rad's incoming ambient air is now 24C.

Yate Loons scale very well. Just use a controller to run them at 800-1000RPM.
