I've just recently got permission to use a CNC lathe at my school, so I was thinking of using that and making some of my own barbs. Anyone got any ideas?
I don't really know how I'd start my design, or what would be best.

Yeah, or if you wanted to make some money. Make something similar to those, but way oversized to fit G3/8 (3/8" BSPP) for Thermochill Rads. You could probably sell them easily for $10ea or more. Danger Den pretty well maxed out the diameter for G1/4, but nobody takes advatage of the larger G3/8".
Post some process pics, I'd like to see some of this CNC lathe action.. ![]()

Heh, Doubt I'll be able to sell them as I'll probably be making quite a few just for me, not too sure how my school would feel about letting me use it that much. :P Quote:
I'll probably make a test run of 4 G3/8" barbs, and 6 G1/4" barbs - what I'd need for my loop. That way, if they are good, I can set them all up :P Now, I 'd need to make sure they fit all areas of my loop (my GFX block is the main concern, the inlets sit very close to the side of the block. Other than that, it should be good. What would help is some ideas for how long to make them, how many flares to have on them, how wide to make the flares, etc... - Is this just a preference and looks thing? Is longer better as it'd offer more secure grip? Or would longer ones just get in the way more? Edit: Also, any ideas on what to use for the material? Brass?

Yeah, definately brass. I've seen stainless also, but I think brass is the most cost effective.
It polishes up nicely too.. ![]() You'll probably need at least 7/8" or 1" roundbar for the G3/8 barbs, those boys are huge. I bought a bunch of 3/4 thinking it would be big enough for an o-ring retainer....nope. Turns out my lathe chuck full length at at 3/4" dia max, so I wasn't going to evey try making any of the thermochill barbs. Besides, something that complex is better suited to a cnc or better yet a swiss screw machine to crank out a big lot of them in a hurry.
