Default Swiftech MCP655 or Swiftech MCP655-B

Does the $10.00 price increase justify having the speed controller on the Swiftech MCP655 rather than no speed controller on the Swiftech MCP655-B?

Yes it does. The MCP655-R version on the "5" setting gets 30% more flow than the -B version which runs at the equivalent "4" setting, Martin tested it.

I believe Martins' tests were done at 13.8 volts. ( correct me if I'm wrong on this Martin )

The tests I've just run on my Vario and B models at 12 volts shows the B actually comes closer to the 2 setting of the Vario. About 48" of head on the B model as compared to 158" on the Vario at setting 5.

I bought another vario as soon as I found this out.

Yep, I tested at 13.8 V and it was only a max head pressure test.

Laing's brochure at the top of page 4 here states the setting 4 for the basic model. I never actually ran a full curve although I probably should sometime just to check. 48" isn't setting 4, so who knows...

I wouldn't buy the basic for the price difference. Variable gives you options and more pumping power if needed.

Thanks for the verification Martin.

I'd tried multiple times with the "B" model to achieve something closer to my Vario's setting 4 but never even came close.
Perhaps I received a really really poor B model ?
Possibly. I won't be spending the money on another one to find out tho'.

I just came off of a 4 day, 12 hour nights shift ( 6pm-6am ) so I'm gonna hit the hay for a bit.
I do have images of the Vario and the B model while testing them. I'll get those shrunk down and post them sometime later today for everyone to scrutinize.

First, for $10 more you might as well go for the vario. But I've always wondered - how does that 30% difference in flow manifest itself in temp difference? In a given rig, will this 30% increase in flow give me lower temps? If so, how much?

Well I've found that slowing down my pump results in higher temps almost immediately. Haven't kept it on lower settings much for that reason, so no exact numbers sry.

Maybe run at 4 for an idle/load period and then at 5 for the same period. Let us know what the T Deltas are.

I tested in extensively and found it not to be significant.
