Noob question about pumps

New to Overclock.net
|
I just got my Blueline pump today, and i wanted to test it.
__________________I took a large glass of distilled water and tryed to suck it up with the pump... Nothing happend. When i poured water into the pump it worked fine. Question... Do pumps suck in water? or do i need to mount the res higher to allow the water to force itself into the pump??

You should NEVER run a pump without water. The pump's impeller and motor needs water to operate properly. Otherwise, they can grind and burn out.
In a closed loop, the water coming out of the pump pushes the water into the pump. In an open loop, you need to feed the water into the pump.

pumps are made to run when full of water. They need the resistance and the cooling the water provides. Also, water molecules are bound together, so when the system is bled, the water helps "pull" itself along. (very much like syphoning gas out of a car, once it starts flowing, it will keep flowing even after you stop sucking)
When you run a pump without fluid, it spins much too fast and can overheat. Always try to prime the system as much as possible before turning the pump on.

Okay, of course one can order any way one wants. But I would recommend that the res/T always come before and be higher than the pump as a rule of thumb.

A pump pushes great, it doesn't have much suction...Never run it dry, that Blueline I would put the res about 12-18" over it with a 5/8 or 3/4" suction line from the res..That way it will have a true flooded suction...I have a 5 gallon bucket res for my vertical Iwaki with a 3/4" suction line going down to it, its a sealed res, if you ran one open it would have crud growing in it in a week......

So My swiftech Res has 1/4 threads.. Do they make a 1/4 to 3/4 nipple?

![]() Threading is the angle and number of threads on the screw. The nipple size is how big the fitting is. Are you looking for a G1/4" thread, 1/2" Outer Dimension fitting? This will fit tubing that has a 1/2" or 7/16" Inner Dimension.
