Default Swiftech MCR220 Quality?

So, the dig is that I am down on chips a bit and don't feel like springin' $120 for a Thermochill 120.2. I was thinking about a BI GTX Gen2, but thats $100. I would like to get a Swiftech 220, or if the other Black Ice radiators (Similar or a little bit more) are better. I am just cooling my E6600 for now.

Also, whats the deal wit this Swiftech MCR 220 Res version? It says it has a reservoir in it. Any use?

I'm so damn bored with school and work, I need a new project to get my mind going again. Doing the mundane for so long kills me, and I think a WC project is in order.

(I am secretly refreshing this page in hope that Ira-K responds)

Edit, also 1000th post!

Thanks man, but I have a heatercore on another system and for this one I am looking for it to be more aesthetically pleasing than that one.

TnB- Can you give me some performance data and or comparisons?

They are fine, the pain flakes off pretty easily, but no worse than some many times more expesive.

I've had an MCR320 cooling my E6600 for a very long time and the water runs no more than aabout 3.8C higher than ambient under 100% TAT (E6600 at 3.3Ghz, 1.38Vcore) load using Yate Loon D12SL12s at 12.0V. A PA with this little heat isn't going to be much different, likely less than 1 degree better.

But I'd consider the BIPs and XSPC radiators very similar. Shop around and see what you can get for a good price, heatercore is another good one for low price.

I would suggest an MCR320 if you can fit it though, it's worth the small extra cost.

The Swifty aren't bad, I had a 220 and it did OK with a 3800 Venice on it at 1.6 v-core. they are about like a BIP, I think the BIP is better with higher cfm fans then the Swifty, and the Swifty might be a little better with sub 50cfm ultra low cfm fans...Like Martin was saying I'd get a 320 for sure, that would be plenty for a CPU only loop....

Now if you don't mind running some higher cfm fans, like these at least..86cfm Pana...A BIX is a more Hi Po rad..BIX 240..You could get by with a 240 for a CPU only loop, but then again I'd grab the 360 since its not that much more $$$, then it would be plenty for a CPU and GPU loop if you didn't want ot run 2 loops for them....BIX 360.

I still have a 120 & 240 BIX and wouldn't get rid of them for anything.....

EDIT: Those rads with a res built into them are for that all in one block and pump they have now, I'd just get a normal rad....

The Swifty MCR220-QP Rad+Res is a space saver, however one must take into account the pump location needs to be after that Rad+Res for drawing the proper fluid flow.

Some pumps like the DDC (MCP350/355) or D5 (MCP600/655) can not run dry, thus they need priming upon startup.

Having the Res being part of the Rad is very helpful.
- Less tubing to run or connect (less leak connections)
- Space savings in most applications
- Very easy to refill if mounted to the rear of a case

The Rad+Res isn't anything new. HP recently did this on their xw9400 workstation/desktop server. The cooling solution is made by Hitachi.

I think I'm moving to the Swifty 320. I'm just going to mount the rad outside, with the middle fan attached to the radbox, the tubes coming in through a pci bracket, or something.

I only have like 19.5" to stick a case in, if anyone knows of a case that is better suited than my chopped up Armor Jr, please let me know and I will buy.

I like having my rad out in the cooler room ambients anyway, I always keep them out of the case....If I ever do use another case I'd look at the CM Stacker first, nice and big...Cheaper and I wouldn't mind cutting on so much would be a Cheiftec/Chemming Server case.....

That's one way of looking at it for temps. Another way to look at hanging or remote location the cooling loop is to reduce any chance of LEAKS. With today's hardware costing more than one ounce of gold, keepin the main hardware out of the case is ideal. Only running the lines into the case helps.
