Default Pump/waterblock question

K, two questions here. I know that my laing D5 is only good until 0C, no lower, so I need a new pump that can handle sub zero temps. Can anyone find me a good cheap one for 1/2"ID tubing?

Second question is, Will my apogee gt be able to handle the sub zero temps? (properly insulated of course)

I thought you were going to keep it at ambient or a hair lower? Have you decided to go lower...

I think you might be able to get away with the Apogee,Thats just guessing, a all metal block would be better of course, but there not cheap,if you like it and want to keep doing it you might get fstfrddy to make you one..Stinger WB.

Pump I don't really know, I've seen guys using Little Giant and Via Aqua's in their slush box, most of them I've seen were using AC Iwaki's in-line....Again if you do like it and continue to use it you might want to go with a Iwaki...

I'd be tempted just to use a cheap pump and just turn it off when your not around it...Thats what I do with my TEC's, I don't trust them any further then I can throw them..Be sure to set a shut down temp in bios, if your bios doesn't support that Speed Fan has that option....

Yea, I got to thinking about it, and what is the point of keeping it slightly above ambient?

So I'll go as cold as the ac unit will go

Iwakis are really expensive.. I think i'll just go with the via aqua or something. Would the via aqua 1300 be ok for a cpu only loop?

Well I found this thread...5,000 BTU Window AC Chiller...One guy was saying his Delrin top cracked out after 3 months of chiller use, but you might be able to coat it with a 2 part epoxy to make it last longer...Also the guy had to run wind shield washer fluid to get any flow, the anti-freeze (Pentosin) was getting to thick...Also he used some kind of little pond pump, you have to take them apart and seal it with silicone to use as a submerged....

I wish we had a chiller forum here, and a Dry Ice/LN2, I would like to see you get some advise from guys who are actually doing it...I've never done it so anything I saw is just second hand BS as far as I'm concerned...

This guy has a nice rig and comes through every now and then...jkenzie : photos : water chiller-.....You might PM him and get some good info...

Well had thought of something last night. My pump which is plastic is only rated to 0C..... so I figured I could set the same limit for the Apogee. I figure if I can tweak the system and keep the water entering the pump and block a few degrees above 0C, but still under ambient, I won't have to worry about those two breaking and I'll still get better temps.

Why is the d5 only good to 0c? I am pretty sure I had mine below that this past winter with my bong chiller setup. I also remember seeing pics of a chiller setup with ice covering the tubing and the d5 they were using as a pump. Is that the manufacturer rated temp or will it stop functioning below that?

Not sure, but on petras it says operating temp is 0-60C

http://www.petrastechshop.com/swmcin12pu.html

I can't seem to find any temperature info on the apogee.

I looked in their brochure and the plastic topped pump is only good down to -0C, you might be able to go lower, but I don't know how safe it would be..

+32° F to +140°f (+/- 0 to + 60°C) for pumps with plastic housing

Well that will get you going, and if you see you really like it and want to continue, you can get the right gear and go as low as you can...

I don't blame you for not wanting to invest in a Iwaki right now and a metal block...

I'd look at the Iwaki 20 or 30 RL for a chiller loop, the 30 has to much heat dump really for just a WC'ing loop, but a chiller it should be fine...The RL's have a decent head and real good flow...I have the 20RZ which is a high head pump, and you don't really need all that head for your blocks since the chilled water is doing the cooling for you...The WMD are USA made and the MD are Japanese made, the MD are a little smaller and not as noisy, I went with a WMD and I don't regret it, its a really nice well made pump...Heres where I got mine at..Iwaki AC Pumps.

DONT GET THE RLX PUMPS...They are a real low head pump that is only good for circulation, no good for what we need them for...
