What are the cons for not having a vario pump. It seems like there is a 20-30 dollar price difference. I'm trying to justify if it is worth it.

I'm not sure but I think the Vario pump has more flow.

I'm pretty sure the non vario d5 is stuck at setting 3/5.

Yes the vario can achieve more flow on the 5 setting. Depending on the block you use, going from a 1 setting to a 5 setting can make as much as a 10C difference. The danger den TDX for example performs fantastically when there's a fast flow. Other blocks don't depend on flow as much. A vario can also help if you're using multiple blocks or a few restrictive blocks.

I think if you put the Vario to it's highest setting (Number 5) it gives 30% more flow than the non-vario version.

The fixed version runs at the 4 setting, and it's only $10 more to get the vario, and worth it too.

No the Vario is not a must pump to use. I'm running a MCP355 w/Petra's top in my CPU loop and it hangs neck and neck with the Vario per Martinm's flow chart. But with a XSPC top on a 355 it puts out more flow and pressure.
