Can a fan like this with 3 wires run off my power supply? Can I run 8 of the together? Here are some details on the fan: "Blue lead is a 5V tach output, referenced to the +12V line, somewhat non-standard, can be ignored and left unconencted if not required."

What I do is just find a normal MOLEX connector. Cut the wires and splice it and black goes with black, red goes with red. A little electrical tape, done.

Sure, Just put male molex on the red and black, just remember that the red fan tail wire will be going to a yellow 12vdc PSU wire...The PSU's red wire is 5vdc..Its yellow 12vdc and the black are ground..
When I wire a bunch up like that I just run a long 18 guage copper multi-strand wire for the 12v and one for the ground, just cut out little spots off the long wires insulation for each fan tail and solder it to the main wire, heat shrink it or tape it on each one...

Color__Function Yellow..+12 V Black...Ground Black...Ground Red.....+5 V So wouldn't red (fan) go with yellow (PSU), black (fan) with black (PSU), and blue (fan) with red (PSU)?

Just like I explained to you above, just run two long main wires and connect all the fan tails to it...All the red on one side and all the blacks on the other..

Your blue wire is for RPM indication ... normally this the yellow wire on a 3-pin fan connector.
Confusing, I know. 4-pin connectors have +12volts, ground, and +5volts for cd/dvd drives, hard drives, and the like. 3-pin connectors are commonly found on fan headers on the motherboard itself. Some ( but not all ) motherboard headers have the ability to read the rpm of the fan plugged into it. Such as the CPU fan header. So to answer your question, the blue wire on your fan(s) is not needed for normal operation. As far as the question regarding the "8 fans together" ... yes, they can be run together. The trick here is that you'll want to wire them in parallel rather than series. Check this link here for wiring - http://www.overclock.net/water-cooli...ns-series.html
