Default Upgrade my Thermalright XP-120?

I am running a Pentium D 840 extreme edition and as I plunge deeper into over clocking the old dog I find this thing gets very hot!

Since a "unfortunate incident" I had with a watercooling kit I was using back in the day I've been using my Thermalright XP-120 which has served me well. But just dont know if its going to cut it for this.

I was thinking of digging out my old watercooling kit (some cheapo from ebay). Or ordering / building one.

Without spending hundreds would it be worth it think i'll even see much a of an improvement?

would it not be a better idea to invest some money in a new CPU instead?

An E7200 costs only $130, and will run circles around your Pentium D. Plus, your current cooler will be more than enough to keep that chip cool. With some luck, you could get over 3.5GHz easily...

Heck, even the $70 E2180 will outperform your current CPU.

I'd upgrade the CPU.

Sound advice. Your motherboard will work with the C2D series - just not 45nm.

Very true. Also, the EXXXX will help your GPU help you.

And indeed, the mobo will support those CPUs:

http://global.msi.com.tw/index.php?f...0&maincat_no=1

It actually DOES support the dual core 45nm chips (E7xxx and E8xxx series).

Ya I am planing on upgrading the CPU, but Im waiting for the next intel retail edge bundle to become available.

$230 for a QX6850 i just cant pass up

So im forcing myself to make do with what i've got for now.

Only reason Im using that 840 EE is I got it from a friend at intel for under $100 bucks. Not a bad deal

When is that coming out?

Oh, and even then, if you're going to spend money on watercooling now, I still recommend just to pick up the E2180... can always sell it when you get that QX6850...

Yes but no quad 45nm.

Honestly man, It would be crazy to spend 100+ dollars on a WC kit when you could get an E2xxx or E4xxx series cpu for less, that is quite literally twice as fast as your current cpu at the same clock speeds and can be easily overclocked to 3ghz.+ speeds.

If that is anything like the QX6700 it will need a water cooler, to overclock. It is a GO which will help, but it is also a 130W chip stiock. I went water due to the extreme heat 72C of this chip running at a paltry 3.2 GHz and 1.38 volts using the Xigmatek cooler, arguably one of the top air coolers out.

A Swiftech 220 might do okay for you, maybe, but to get a better kit you will need to spend some some money.

The one in my sig was $360 and keeps my temps now at 62 running at 3.5 and 1.48 volts. Made all the difference to me.

This is a good kit and should keep the QX nice and cool. Kit I would upgrade the rad to a 320 but other than that it is pretty solid. Yes you can get better radiators but they cost quite a bit more.
