Buy a metal bowl that won't cause galvanic corrosion, then drill the holes and use acryilic with like superglue to seal them off? That's what I would do, but probably only because I have no machining knowledge at all.

Your idea with the eye color is really cool. IMO you should have the eyes a uv yellow or green acrylic and then put red leds on a switch so you can just do a simple hostile, friendly thing!!!

The buckyball design may alleviate the need to use compound angles as the panels are comprised of hexagons and pentagons.

These geometric shapes are not inherent in the design of the BD's head(s), but perhaps they could be tweaked in a manner so that the final outcome becomes clear insofar as the intention.

Another possibility is following in the footsteps of the geodesic dome. Here is a little blurb on them. If you scroll down a little ways you will see some formulae that outlines some of the basics for various geometric shapes and their potentiality in constructing 3-D objects.

This may all seem over-the-top, but oftentimes obstruse information contains small nuggets of useful techniques that are transferable to a smaller and less complicated project.

I can see that you are well-prepared in the design stage as your drawings are excellent, and outlined clearly.... I only wish that I had that kind of skill...

P.S.

I did receive your PM, and I will respond this evening.
Thanks for the info. At first I was a little confused, since Buckminster Fuller balls are the shape of choice for carbon nanostructures. I read about them in Discover magazine. Cool stuff.

That could be a good starting point. The airholes would be a little complicated to work with, but maybe something like a fishbowl would be another good starting point.

I'm actually going to redo my Windows Sounds so that they're all sound clips from Bioshock. Imagine the windows logoff as "Time for beddy-bye, Mr. B"

Yeah, that's kind of the idea I had at the beginning, but I think I'm going to stick with one color to K.I.S.S. The shape itself is already pretty complicated, don't want to cause myself more headache. :P

I was going to suggest using a metal or glass bowl as a mold, then heat up the acrylic and hve it form over it. That would give you the half-globe you are looking for. Small fish-tanks might be worth looking at as well.

Looks to be a great build. I'm sub'in in for the awesome factor!

At the moment I'm sending emails to a few local companies that do custom injection molding of plastics in regards to pricing for the half-sphere. I have a feeling that it might be a bit on the expensive side, even for a single small-scale sphere, but I'll wait on their appraisals to decide how I'll go about getting one made.

Thanks for all the input, guys. In the meantime, keep an eye open for inexpensive methods to create a plastic sphere that I could use, as well as anything else that might help the process.

Nice finds! Only thing is 12cm != 12in lol :P

EDIT: Globes with a 4 3/4" or 5" diameter could work.

Yea what was I thinking, posting a 12in globe,LOL.

The smallest I can seem to find is a 6in globe ( linkage ) Maybe you could cut it past the half mark and make it a bit smaller.
