Did a test this morning...removed the fans from my radiator and ran Orthos...temps went from 44 load to 48 load, idle temps really didn't change (but they're idle, who cares ). Loop specs:

Black Ice GTX360
D-Tek Fuzion V1 (washer + nozzle, either 5.5 or 6.3, unsure)
MCW-60 + ramsinks
D5 vario (setting "5")
Microres

All in a 20C ambient

False alarm...just checked the idle temps to make sure it would still be feasible...idle was pushing 50C. Reinstalled the fans, probably going to get a fan controller next week.

watch the orientation of the fan.
It has to be pushing the air in the same direction of your case's air flow or else you'll be blocking it

Hey thats how you learn......I tried a passive with a 320W heat load on my 480 once, it did pretty well for about 45 minutes, but the temp's just kept rising...Any kind of air movement on them will help though, I wish I had tried it with even a couple of the little 47cfm YL's just to see if it would of held the load with acceptable temp's....

Yeah, passive just does not work. Even with the massive and open finned (Optimized for low speed fans) TFC480, a 100 watt heatload brings deltas up near 20 degrees and still climbing.

The key to this is that it takes a LONG time. Even after almost 3 hours I was still climbing...


This is the test I ran yesterday and finally shut down after 3 hours and still climbing...

The interesting thing is the air out sensor were not recording much heat coming out either and my air in sensors were getting radiant heat that messed up their recordings as well. Anyhow, this is the best radiator I can think of for such a task and it doesn't work.

Radiators now matter which are just too dense for running passive, you MUST run fans.

Yea, my first clue to there being something wrong was that my leg (case sits just to the left of my leg) was getting rather warm (usually the fans pull air through the rad and blow it onto my leg. So I reach down and felt the inlet tube to the reservoir, felt really warm. Touched the fins of the rad, even warmer Slapped some fans on, cooled it down real fast. Lesson learned
