Default What is a heatercore?

Hi I was just wondering what a heatercore is, I've seen it a few times in here and I was wondering if someone could explain. Thanks.

Quite simply, the heatercore from a car or truck.

Usually a '77 Bonneville is used as a standard ... it tends to fit the 120 or even 140mm fans pretty well.

Wiki is your friend: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Heater_core

In PCs, it's just usually used as a water cooling radiator. They were all the rage when purpose-built radiators were too expensive/harder to find. Today's rads beat heater cores on price/perf I believe, but don't quote me on it.

You bet ... can get a new one at Autozone for about $25.99

They are still a good choice for a budget build but most peeps are buying the "purpose-built" rads because of the efficiency and the "Bling" factor.

They just don't look slick like anything HW-Labs would build (GTX series )

But they cool better than all of the dual 120mm rads.

Yeah, they are good, and I hope to prove that pretty soon. They should be similar to a thicker density radiator and if you build a shroud to make use of the full area, it would do exceptionally well with higher pressure fans.

They used to be extremely popular back in the days when you had to build stuff for water cooling. Unfortunately since water cooling has gone mainstream, people don't like it when they "Have" to mod something to make it work.

Since they don't come painted with G1/4 thread and don't have tapped M4 or 6-32 screw holes, many people simply won't use them.

But if you're the type that likes building and fabricating stuff, a heater core is an excellent way to go especially with high speed/high pressure 38mm fans.
