I personally wouldn't trust myself making a waterblock. I also think that with the amount of tools/hardware people have at home you wont be able to beat the performance of proven high end waterblocks.

Yeah.... if you don't have a CNC mill handy, I would leave waterblock building to the pros. It'll save you a system

There are the 3 that come to mind for me. Not a doubt in my mind they would blow just about any home made block out of the water (no pun intended).

Edit: Not only would they outperform home made blocks, they are probably more durable than just about any home made block. I say "just about any" because you never know there could be a few crazy home waterblock makers out there, none that I have ever seen though.

I beg to differ. I've seen a worklog here by 2 german dudes who set up a mini mill in their basement and are churning blocks out like mad, looks like quality stuff to. I'll try to find the thread.

honestly, i'd say maybe a difference of 8°C between a home made block and a commercially built block. if u have access 2 a drill press and some vise clamps, u could make a decent lower block... as far as the top half, that'll take some extra work.

they also have a big CNC machine at work.... Use CNC mills for rapid proto typing as well...

A simple way to make a block is to take a piece of copper and drill a bunch of dimples in the surface with the tip of a drill bit. You need to drill far enough in to make the base relatively thin, no more than 3 mm but should be at least 1~1.5 mm thick at the thinnest point. if you made a square block I would recommend drilling dimples in some sort of circular arrangement. For the top you could use a piece of delrin or acrylic with 2 holes tapped for G1/4 threads. This would require you to buy a tap but thats only like $5 and would b great to have if you ever planned on building more blocks. You would then have to use a piece of gasket material(found at ace hardware) between the top and the bottom and of course use a bunch of bolts around the edges to hole the two plates together. While this will not be the best block it will be homemade and it should work. Check out some of the pics of the blocks I made here. They were made with a mill but are not very complicated and could be made with a drill press as long as you are patient. The top I made had 1 in 4 out but it would have been a lot easier to make a 1 in 1 out. The dimples also don't have to be in a specific pattern the could just have easily been a completely random organization.

Without a CNC Mill at hand, the words "waterblock" and "easy" are an oxymoron.
