in the past some of you may remember me praising Swiftech's Hydrex coolant additive....im here to say i was wrong...i have had my latest loop running for about 4 months now and now im starting to see algae growing all over inside all my tubing. i run a dual loop system and there is algae inside both loops. so a word of caution from a sworn Hydrex user , steer clear of this product. and yes , it was mixed according to the manufacturers directions.

You sure it's algae and not just the tubing sucking up the coolants color?
What kind of water were you running?

100% distilled water...im pretty sure its not the coloring as you can see it moving with the current in the loop. its in my reservoirs as well.

I've run in over a year now no problems, but I do also add two drops of PTnuke.
Hydrx is just ethelene glycol like all the other coolants, so you'll probably want some PTnuke in there regardless of the fluid used.

I've only run Hydrx, Pentosin G11, and some Petra's Long Life Red each in thier own loop along with some added dyes to the G11 and the red + PTnuke.
The only problem I've had was with the Long Life Red discoloring one of my tubes white and the red eventually staining the tubing pretty bad. The G11 and Hydrx have always been good, you'll still get a little dye staining, but nothing bad. I've always put it in my "Cheap but works fine" book and I still buy it. The ethelyne glycol will add some corrosion protection, that's mainly why I use it (added security), otherwise I'd just run distilled and PTnuke. Or if someone made a 7/16"ID x 5/8"OD UV tubing, I'd probably make that switch as well and completely abandon the dye.

there is some uv reactive tubing, but it's more expensive and I haven't found anything that I like. I think the clear tubing is good for when you setup and leak test so when you run just water (and maybe pt nuke) you can clearly see what's going on.

What concentration were you running BTW? I run 2 bottles/litre; should I flip out and panic about the colonies growing in my loop?
