D5 is a much more solid more reliable pump.
Yes, the DDC is faster, but a D5 rarely fails.

DCC = more head.
D5 = more flow.

Would that translate to:
D5 for a restrictive system
DDC for a high-flow system?

The DDC should do a little better in a restrictive loop because it has more head, but in a actual loop the D-5 will almost keep up with it..So the 18W DDC is a hair better, but you have to buy a extra top for it to be that hair better...Plus the D-5 is just a rugged, good reliable pump..

These new DDC are looking like they will be durable to, they de-tuned the old 18W orange impeller DDC because of all the early deaths...

The old 18W DDC before they were de-tuned were a heck of a pump, 2 of them in series with tops were just plain sick......I miss them...

Yeah, even though the DDC's with tops are king of performance, I still trust the D5's more. Putting a top on a DDC's works the pump motor a fair amount more, they seem to have fixed the problems from the DDC2, but...the D5 is a solid performer and runs much cooler externally than the DDC 3.2.

I just don't like the amount of heat that comes off the DDC 3.2, it bothers me. I have two DDC 3.2s, had a DDC 2, DDC1, and have two D5varios and one D5basic.

The DDC's are stronger in performance and smaller, but the D5's have a longer history of trouble free long term reliability and come out of the box with 1/2" barbs and run really good plain old stock.

Both pumps are plenty strong enough for 99% of the systems out there.
