arcticsilver.com read the instructions for your cpu. it's a thin line that runs down the middle (make sure your orientation is correct).

Northbridge, just smear a bit on and you'll be fine. It's pretty small.

The best is debatable. Among the best are Arctic Cooling's MX2, Shin Etsu X23, and the classic Arctic Silver 5. There are many good ones all within a few degrees of each other.

For quads it is a vertical line of TIM down the middle of the IHS.

It is hard to say, supposedly Tim Consultants T-C Grease 0098 is the new best from a review I saw awhile ago, but there isn't much of a difference between the ones mentioned, any of them will do just fine.

Correct, it's a vertical line down the middle.
Quad and Duo Core have different thermal instructions. I use the jelly bean method and squish the block on :P

Yeah, I also heard the TC grease was spectacular. The best TIM out there is supposedly Arctic Cooling MX2, OCZ Freeze, TC Grease and the Shin Etsu stuff. Sadly, AS5 is no longer one of the best. DOn't get me wrong, it's very good, but it has a lower amount of silver, decreasing it's conductivity.

I also heard Ceramique was good.

I can also recommend Arctic MX-2 as well as TC-Grease 0098.

I always spread the thermal grease thinly and evenly across the whole surface of the CPUs heatspreader. It seems to me, that should give you the best temperatures, since all of the surface of the heatspreader is thermally "connected" to the base of the heatsink.

I'm not saying that this IS the best method, just that I assume it is. If anyone could explain the reasoning behind the thin line method, I'm always eager to learn! :-)

Cheers,
Shane

I use a double edge razor blade and really work it into the top of my IHS and bottom of my block...Just a real light see through layer, I work it from side to side and up and down..Then I do the dot or line, what ever is appropriate for the chip that I'm using...

the way in which i understand heatsinks to work is that they want to have a little amount as possible of the thermal paste as possible, so that the heat can get through easier. i try to put only a tiny bit on the cpu and then spread with a business card or credit card to cover the whole cpu with only just enough to cover it. then chuck the heatsink on without moving it around too much and ur good to go
with love from me.
