I am looking at building a new desktop and was wondering if a Tri Loop was really necessary.
Currently I am wanting the following, Quad-Core 3.0 GHz Processor 2x GTX280's 2x VelociRaptors 1x 1TB Storage drive 4x 1GB Sticks of DDR3 1800 790i Ultra (and of course Sound Card, CD Drive. etc) Will probably have a 1000W or 1200W PSU powering it all. Anyway, I do plan to overclock a bit but nothing huge, I figured I can Water cool the CPU with 1 loop and the Video Cards with another loop, and the rest can be air cooled efficiently. If this is incorrect please let me know as the other option was: Loop1 - CPU/Motherboard Loop2 - Video Cards Loop3 - Hard Drives (Raptors Only) / RAM Thanks, the advice is greatly appreciated. |

as im sure others will agree....watercooling your HDD and RAM is pretty much pointless tbh. unless its for bragging and eye candy
(EDIT: and as your not going to be extremely OC'ing your ram, theres no real gain in watercooling)id personaly go with two loops one for your two 280's and the other for your CPU and NB. EDIT: and if your not going to be extreme OC'ing, then you probably could get away with a 24cm Rad for your CPU and NB and go with a 36cm for your GPU's.

Just wet your cpu, nb and gfx cards for performance. If you desire to saturate your entire build go for it. Just remember the OCN rule:

Tri-loop for the uber-headache!! More connections to fail..more pumps to fail..more stuff that can be done incorrectly and still produce mediocre temps!
Stick with a single loop and get a large, thick radiator + 1x good strong pump..you will be very pleased..and headache free too.

I know my older 74GB WD Raptors run hot (too hot to touch after heavy use), would it improve overall lifetime of the drives to keep them cooler? if you could extend the life of your velociraptors by a few years just by watercooling them, i'd say it'd be worth it.

there are air-based hard-drive coolers that cool your hotties down to ambient no sweat. even just a fan over them will keep them cool to the touch.

can't wait for i7?
q9650 yeah watercool baby.... videocard: why not 4870x2? singlecard then upgrade later...x58 supports both sli and cf.. rams: 2x2gb would be cooler(temp) do not go 4x1gb ...the csx diablos are 1.8v compared to old ddr2 rams these are cooler(temp wise) hd: i got a velociraptor...currently dead...passive huge heatsink does remove the heat...goes 30c from an ambient of 23c...with a fan temps go down to around 24-27 depending on fan speed i have a silverstone 92x38 which can cut fingers... psu: get the silverstone 1200...single rail mobo: get the asus rampage extreme

the silverstone iirc has a less than optimal power ripple... or it was something with the cables that didnt please me... personally id go for the PCP&C 1000 or 1200.
currently owning the 1000, i am very satisfied with its stability.

Case Modder
|
Loop1 - CPU double/triple rad
Loop2 - Video Cards / motherboard, triple rad Loop3 - Maybe mobo seperate, single rad.

i have 2 loops and space becomes an issue unless ur case is beyond huge. running all those tubes gets confusing becauseyou have to remeber which goes where. sure all the lines look cool but it's pointless to cool anything other than cpu,gfx and the ocassional n/b.
