Hi folks,
__________________Quick heads up to the N00B5 like me. If you buy the EK GTX280 waterblock it says in the instructions to fit the cooler using thermal paste. Don't do it. Slightly to much an the overflow shorts stuff out and the card is FUBAR. Better to use thermal pads. (Found a You Tube vid after doing it.) Anyway fortunately I was really really careful taking it apart and after a go in the ultrasonic board cleaner at my fathers work it looks mint again. Now having to RMA it. Please learn from my mistakes..... It's cheaper....

umm not to be mean but all members here that replace the coolers know to get thermal pads and not just drop a bunch of AS5 on the memory

I have used AS5 on my video cards in the past and recently did it on my 4870x2. I also keep the old pads on as they are still good. If needed I'll buy them from Performance-PCs. This really sounds more like a user error. I applied an extremely thin layer of AS5 on my GPU's, shown below and reused the thermal pads that came on the card. ![]() As you see, the ram has no paste. I'm just reusing the thermal pads as they are still good.

You broke it. Thermal paste can get all over everything and it'll be fine.

I feel bad for the company getting screwed replacing a $400 card that they supplied in perfect working order.

omg you broke your GTX 280
__________________![]() You should apply a THIN layer of thermal pasty and even it out with an old creditcard or some cardboard so you dont get air in between... If you took good care this wouldnt happen. And yes thermal grease can go everywhere
