Default HM Heat Exchanger

After working on my "mod" for two years.. (It seems there is always a new project to try) I'm on to adding an active cooling loop to my water system. Since I don't want to impact the normal opperation of the machine, i decided to add a secondary cooling system. This will be similar to Nuke reactors cooling setup. the primary loop is uneffected blocks: radiator: res: pump except i'll add a heat exchanger in line after the rad. ie blocks: radiator: heta exchanger: res: pump.

now I can play with alternate cooling options in the secondary loop and always have the pimary one intact. I already know some of the limitations of this set-up. ie i can not let the primary loop get below ambiant room temp (or at least dew point) and the radiator will become useless at some point.

so I'm going to work on a temp controled TEC chiller for the secondary loop as well as a outdoor radiator (winter is coming).

Might even try a swamp cooler...

Any other ideas to play with??

and please if you have to ask why... I'm an engineer, why not!

some picts->

current build w/o new heat exchanger. pvc pipe was uses for the frame as well as most of the h2o piping and res.

customn heat spreader/ adapter for the 780I NB

1/4" copper tubes set in plexy and epoxy for heat exchanger

Shell of the heat exchanger awaiting cutting and windows. I would be a shame to have all those copper tubes and not show them off!!

The heat exchanger is a great project. Some suggestions:
Use a clear acrylic tube instead of PVC with a window.
Have a look at plate heat exchangers. They are much more efficient than shell and tube heat exchangers. I'd bet you could pick up a small one on ebay cheep , and mod it. It woudn't be too hard to make on either.
You're using standard schedule 40 PVC pipe components. Have a look at schedule 20 PVC. The OD of 3/4" fittings is about the same as the OD of 1/2" schedule 40 fittings, and it's easier to work with (cuts with a pipe cutter).
And finally. I approached adding edditional cooling a little differently. See attached.

I would love to as well as the rest of the piping that I use. It becomes cost prohibitive @ $67 for 4'.

I will look into the sch 20, although Home Depot is my main source of parts

I love the check valve idea!! I will have to look into something like that in the future.

It is all about scaling to me. Having low power set up for normal use and a high capicity setup for folding and gamong.

I like the heat exchanger....I run a TEC loop with a big sealed bucket res, the res has its own cooling loop with a external pump and rad, really seems to help keep my temp's more stable..

Yeah it looks like fun, I think all of us have wanted to make in-line heat exchangers at one time or another..
