The amount of mist he has coming out of that fan seems strange to me, unless he has it blowing air out of the bong rather than into the bong. That is always possible.
I like that fact that the clear tower illustrates what I was saying before about water tending to move to the sides of the pipe and leaving a hole in the middle.
This acts to reduce surface area and cooling, and is the reason that ping pong balls or other substrate help with bong cooler performance.

If I could come up with some sort of transparent fabric to use for my 'substrate tube' it might look nice in a clear acrylic tower - perhaps with uv lights making it glow.

edit:
I have been thinking about another rarely seen type of cooler. Sometimes called a sock cooler, it is another type of evaporative cooler. It uses a closed loop with a heat exchanger covered in absorbant material. This is kept partially submerged in a large reservoir. The water wicks up into the absorbant material, and heat from the closed loop heat exchanger causes it to evaporate. This cools the closed loop.
I have only seen a couple pics of one of these coolers, and they were very old. I can not find them online anymore and I would not be surprised if nobody is using one now.
The swamp box cooler I made worked well, and based on that I am thinking that this would work even better. For one thing it would have a closed loop, and the open loop part would be compact and compared to a tower bong should be easy to clean.
The trick will be money of course. I'd need to get like 100 feet of 3/8 soft copper, form it into a dual coil, mount 1/2' by 3/8 wyes on both ends.
edit: I am making an assumption about how much copper I would need for a heat exchanger. I am probably overestimating the needs by a bit, but I think that you can never go 'too far' with cooling your cpu
The wye's will be easy, but that is a lot of soft copper and will probably be expensive. I thought about using a radiator in the water, but I just dont think that there would be good flow through it - I think that instead the water around it would start to heat up. I could be wrong - maybe somebody will decide to test this out and see.

If you did it that way, you could make or find a frame to attach all 3 bong coolers to - next to eachother.

For height I suggest you make them all have 3' high coming out of the wye or san tee. That would give an overall height of about 4'6" to 5'.
I say this because you will need to move them right? It is a lot easier to move a 5' tall thing with a very small reservoir than to move an 8' bong with a 40 gallon res....
That's talking about the res, right? Not the actual tower. I'm not sure i quite follow what you say... pics?

but yeah portability doesn't really matter since my bong will be kept in hte science lab while i work on it

Yeah i remember reading something last night Here about that guy having the fans on exhaust.

Good read that thread is actually.

Anyway, theonly problem i have with the ping pong balls... wouldn't they
1: Constrict air flow
2: Rattle HEAPS and annoy the crap outta me
3: ???
4: profit

So i was thinking... how expensive would it be to get a glass bong like an erm...bong? instead of acrylic? Agreed with the CCFL lighting though...that would look sicker than a lava lamp

Another thought... what effect would a fan placed at the top (right above the shower head) as an exhaust have?
Would it be positive in that it would take out the hot water vapour-air out of the tower quicker, and possibly slow the droplets speed falling, giving them more surface area
or
Would it be negative in that it would slow the droplets, making them obviously lose speed and therefore cooling capacity?

Nub gets hard core...lol

You don't want too much fan...you will blow water everywhere! Ya want to keep the sprites down!

the balls are for surface area. they help in the evap process. = cooler water.

Nubs bong(lol I almost typed bung) has NO sanitary T. He uses his res top to mount the fans and it blows up holes he drilled in the bottom of the tube.

1 120mm fan is plenty.

The sound bongs make is tranquil you will want to take it home so you have a waterfall sound in your room while you sleep..its quite pimp.

You could have a glass blower make you a bong...it would be very expensive but it would look Killer! it would be easy to clean and stuff as well...however you need to plan it all out with PVC first so you know whats up real well before you spend half a grand on a glass evap cooler.

lol i'm not spending half a grand on a bong... the idea is cheap

and yeah i realise what the purpose of the ping pong balls are, but wouldn't they make a gigantic racket??

You know...I don't know...Nobody has ever reported on the sound of the ping pong balls...I would think it would muffle the shower sound. I know it would all depend on how many you put in...if you filled the whole thing it might be too many but if you only put in a few it might make bad sounds like your saying. filling it up with balls would make it quiet though I bet. I use whiffle balls and it sounds like rain...its nice. You can play with different things to get the sound you want.

Wouldn't the fan blow on the ping pong balls and because they're so light they would just fly everywhere?

You want to keep your fan speed down.. if its blowing ping pong balls out then its gonna blow water EVERYWHERE!!!

These things have way more cooling power then you need.

lol ok. Will be using my crappy 120mm stock Thermaltake fan anyway, so there's no need to worry about ping pong balls flying everywhere.... still they are so light...
