If that output barb on your res is 1/2" inner diameter then that is NOT the problem.
You are correct to want to shorten the line to the shower head so you get that extra foot or so of head back. (IMHO flow is one of the most important things to your cooling adventure.) If you have low flow then your gonna have bad temps. One thing that I was wondering about is did you remember to drill out the inside of your shower head so it is not a 2.5gpm low flow shower head? YOU MUST drill that tiny hole out! I forget to tell people this sometimes. they make shower heads really restrictive to get more pressure out of their jets...you don't need that pressure, you want flow! 2nd Did you clean out that block? Did you reseat it? I bet its not flat against the chip or something....there is this sweet spot you MUST hit or your temps will always be subpar like that. It has to be really hard mount sometimes...to the point where you feel like your gonna break something...but don't break anything man! lol when you take your block off remember to check it with a new razor blade to make sure its flat! CPU also!

OK Mike, so what are your temps while running OCCT and what is the ambient? You report 30C on your socket at idle? Are you sure that is not your nb temp? It sounds like a nb temp to me... BUT if that is your cpu socket temp then it does seem a little higher than I'd expect - from a core2. Have never used an i7 so.... will have to look at temps listed by others. You are also not listing your 1. ambient temp and 2. water temp. Do you have a thermostat yet to take these readings?
edit: Quote: Anyhow, @ 4.01GHz on the CPU, 855MHz core/1105MHz mem on the GPU, and full load, I'm hitting 67C according to RealTemp. At idle I'm still seeing 36C on the highest core. According to the BIOS HW monitor, my socket temp is 30C at idle. --- Mike, have you read this thread? http://www.overclock.net/water-cooli...blocks-i7.html If you locate your block on there, you will see test results claim a 32.8C difference on average between cpu core temp and the water temp. Hopefully you will have a thermometer to measure your water temps soon. If those results are correct you would have 34 to 35C water temps - which is very high. I think your water to core temp delta is higher than found in the testing. However you are clocked to 4ghz. He was at 3.7GHz, 1.28V - try dropping your clock down to that and compare results.

Well, I'm about to enter the wonderful world of bongs. I have my PVC and fittings all laid out and my pump and waterblocks will be here by next weekend. I am going with a 5' tall 4" diameter bong with a YL low speed fan. I got me a $2.98 economy shower head to go at the top too
.I have been lurking in this thread for a while and I have an idea on how to make a pretty bong. Someone brought up the idea of plexi sheets with aluminum angle stock to join the sides. I know that acrylic can be "welded" with solvent and the sides can even be polished up and rounded if desired and you cannot even see a seam. Tons of people build acrylic fishtanks and sumps (a tank-like type of filter) and I've seen some towers of acrylic (for filtering purposes) but I know the same principle oculd be applied to building a bong. Basically, get some plexi sheets (they are very reasonably priced) and solvent welb them together in a long tower, at the bottom you could easily make a tank the same way and even have a kind of "shelf" that the tower sets on so it doesn't have to be permanently joined to the tank. I have seen aquarium filters built very much like this only their tower holds filter media and the tank is a kind of reservoir and the pump sits in it.

yeah i did, this was a while ago. He suggested appealing for it to be undeleted. I QQ'd and didn't bother.

I am going to go ahead and build my tower and leak test it as well as I can and await the arrival of the pump on Friday and proceed with proper leak testing and final assembly then. At seven feet of head the pump should put out 120 gph, that is 5 1/2' for the tower and then a couple more feet for block pressure and reduction fittings, hose barbs, etc. In the end I should come out with a higher flow rate than many people get using a DDC pump and radiators. The high flow should, 1) give me better temps due to a better turnover rate in the tower; 2) let me add more blocks in series and have less of a temperature increase along each block.
I have actually been designing a pretty tower in my head too. All acrylic sheet with an acrylic drip plate at the top and a small, secondary tower to get water to the top. Just two hose barbs at the bottom is all that would be required. Given, this will probably cost close to $100 to build, but it will be well worth it. I will try to get the ideas into 3d and post some pics someday. EDIT: Also, I wonder what would happen if you ran a coil of copper pipe up on the inside of the bong and then at the top hooked it to the shower head. I wonder if it would get a pre-cool effect or if it would just complicate the build or possibly even hurt temps. This is yet another thing that will have to be tried by someone. I am seriously considering the acrylic bong, too. I have it all planned out in my head and I need to try and get some kind of schematic going. I know it would work great and I think it could be done for a very reasonable price, possibly $50 in materials, but it will take lots of cutting, gluing (solvent weld), and polishing (so the edges look nice and the whole thing is seamless).
